why the explorer

for those of you who purchased the explorer why this detector over the others such as the dfx? help me decide on a new toy. thanks

My guess is your answer would be to find things. I think that is why those who stick with the hobby for very long end up with an Explorer. A very simplistic answer is that the Explorer is good at making great finds.

Of course, the DFX is very capable also, as are other great detectors out there now. No matter what you use in order to make great finds, you first have to pass your coil over the top of it. In other words, you play a big role in whether you find things or not. There are other things that come into play like how mineralized is the ground where you hunt, what you are hunting for, and how patient and determined an effort you have time to give to the hobby.

When everything else is in place then it comes down to the performance of the machine. The Explorer performs very well in almost any environment. It detects deep and IDs accurately. It handles minieralized ground well.

Is it perfect? No. None of them are. It is a detector that you can work with and usually find whatever is in the ground as well and usually better than most.

Hope that helps.

I like my Explorer for the night light screen and the dual axis " Ferrous-Conduct" meter.
If you are not in the mood to fiddle with knobs it can give you a more accurate meter reading with more info than the single "Ferrous" type meter.

Hi Tinpan, I would get the Explorer SE. I am very pleased with this instrument. Having the ability to see both the Ferrous and Conductive property at the same time is very nice. Even with a 5" coil it still can be a very good instrument. I know a lot of people dislike the ergonomics of the machine but it doesn't bother me any. Ok Tinpan it is your decision but I hope this helped some. Good luck.

I primary use Whites, I like to company, quality of their detectors and customer service. Ok why buy an Explorer, depth on silver coins and better response on deep targets for example it will id deep coins better than anything on the market. They are pricey in my opinion a bit over priced, but hey a detector can pay for themselves at any given hunt. In my opinion you can't go wrong with either an Explorer or DFX, just remember an Explorer excels on silver coins and a DFX excels on gold jewelry but both will do great on either. Good Luck and HH

Hi I have several detectors and like them all,,,,,, different tools for different jobs. Although I don't feel I have got all that I can from a spot without going over it with my Explorer HH George In Colorado

I was making this exact decision around the turn of the year, after hunting with an XLT for two years. 3 months of research later, I bought the SE.

I like it, because my wife tells me she the love of my life !!! Just in case she reads this, I'd make the same decision in BOTH cases again.:cheekkiss:

Both the DFX and SE are excellent machines.
1. Listen to the guys on this forum.
2. Talk with JW at Kellyco. He'll let you talk your way through it, and won't try to "sell" you on one over the other. HH :twodetecting::minelab:

1. its heavy with poor ergonomics,2. has a long learning period for many and many hit the classifieds not becase of its abilities but because of the users abilities,3. Quite pricey....HOWEVER if you set up the lower rod and armrest to your body and aquire a smooth level swing that just skims the ground, do a lot of research and perhaps some field time with a experienced explorer user you can cut down the learning period as far as pricey lets face it the competition units are not cheap either and just don't have the abilities..
If you conquer all the above you will have a silver magnet and a unit that gives a lot of info with perhaps the best guts in the industry bar none. Heck nothing is perfect including an explorer so I guess its your call...

As many clubmembers swing an Explorer and even the worked out parks that were producing silver are getting tougher every year. Almost time to travel, but lack of a buddy, gas prices have cut down on my trips..Oh for the old days when you drove an hour plus and hunted all day..unfortunately times change as fellow detectorists have increased greatly and old age doesn't come alone and restricts my hunts to several hours..

Some deph readings shown on this depth chart on the web site with the link seem wrong to me, Some depth readings seem too low and some i am sure are exagerated. Maybe i am wrong but i would take those readings with a pinch of salt.

It is the best machine I've used and that includes the DFX and many others.
Learning curve to it, but once you've got it, you won't want to use anything else.
