Why so LITTLE?

New member
OK outside of Troy Detector site and scanty info on net.Why so little info on the Troy Shadow X2? you can find a lot more info on X3 and X5 .Yet what info I can find it seems to be a liked detector by those who know it,and won't part with it.I WANT TO KNOW MORE!!! So lets hear from those quietly working behind the scenes with X2 working its magic.Inquiring minds or mind (ME) want to know .Thanks Woodchuck :please:PS if its TOP SECRET you can PM me LOL

It is functionally much like any of a number of Tesoro 2-filters made over the years. Coil was supposed to provide a little more depth than its sisters, as I recall. But basically, none of the two-filter tesoros are known for depth or TID ability anyhow. They're more known for their ability for separating and averaging. Ie.: good in junky sites. For this purpose, it's good, but has many other equals, in my opinion.

It was built on the Silver Sabre

As it was just a Silver Sabre you just have to check out Tesoro forums/posts. It had a better looking paint job, attention paid to dust getting into the controls, came fitted with the rubber rings that most would fit to their Tesoro's to prevent the knobs moving by accident. The only real change was to the coil which was supposed to detect slightly wider. I seem to remember you could order with a slight frequency change if your partner already had the same model so avoiding frequency clash.

Only when production was moved to Fisher did we really get a true Troy design. The X3 and X5 both performed better over the full range of conductors than say the Tejon. Really nice style, rain/dustproof etc but then you were paying a large premium over the Tejon that many thought it wasn't worth paying.

Like the other guys said, the X2 is a Silver Sabre II with a pot and push button switch added for the coin check feature. When it was released in 1997 there were several who made outlandish depth claims about it, hyped it to the max and claimed the components were military spec and one of the reasons it was so good was because the coils were reverse wound. That was all BS, both Jack Gifford and Troy said the X2 had the same components as the SS II except for the coin check feature and coils. I do like the"Super" 7 inch coil, one stays on the Golden

And I do believe it is one of the best designs around. It has the Goldilocks effect going for it. Not too much or too little-just the right features,in a small package.

Also being able to swap with any 5 pin Tesoro coil is a major bonus.

I installed an adjustable GB externally as some coils run hotter than others. I use the Troy 9'" mostly & it runs very "cool" in that the ground balance setting is very close to the 7" coil. I have a 10x 12 that runs "hot" and have to adjust the GB & coin check to match the coil...

With the 10 x 12 it is a monster akin to the Borg...If it is good & in the ground-it WILL be assimilated. On soccer fields it makes very quick work on a large field.

My main "like" is the excellent target/trash seperation that is common to the Tesoro line-I just think the Silver Sabre just does it a bit better than the latest Silver U-max.

Also the VCO pinpoint is very easy to size/point a target.

But the feature every detector should have is the "coin check". If I am being picky about targets & just want to have the best chance at a nice ring while not missing coins this is the shiznitz.

When the button is pushed it goes into a higher disc mode. I have mine set to crackle on zincs. I can then ignore shallow ones(I know I may miss a masked target or large ring-ya takes yer chances). I can also be nearly certain if it makes a non solid hit it is not a good coin or ring. It works well for can slaw also as they tend to chirp in on at least one pass. If it goes silent when coin check is pushed hold yer breath & cross your fingers-it could be a tab a nickle or a ring. Ya never know.

But over time I've learned to trust what this machine tells me...And that is just about priceless for a detector

Thanx for typing out the information. Very good, and yes, that was the time-line. A lot of people did "rush out and buy one" d/t the hype you correctly describe. I got one back then due to the hype  And then when trying it out, couldn't see how it was any better than any number of existing 2-filter units. Not a bad machine mind you, and it did do well for the things those lineups are known for: ghost-town type and urban demolition type hunting.

yes! it must be said also that the x-2 had a "large" price premium on it when new!
"best" money "new" was $425.00 out the gate!..the s.s.2 was priced "considerably" "lower"
at the time!..just sayin!

(h.h.!)

Yeah, when I got my Silver umax, the dealer had the Troy open and I got to see how the coin check feature was wired and I put a similar version on my Silver umax.

It might have been clearer if I said designed for Troy. Dave was the lead engineer on the X5 (plus Lobo, DFX,GMT,MXT,many of the CZ's and Gold Bugs, T2 ,F75 etc) but the 3 and 5 were the only true "Troy" machines ie he gathered the team rather than taking an old design and modifying it.

Why so little info ? now I know why its got to be the dangest smallest detector I have ever seen . my X2 came today, for a small package can't wait see how big is its bark LOL:unsure::rofl:
