Why NO Silver?

New member
Year to date I've dug up about $20 in clad which is a fair amount of coins. Some of these coins have been in the early 1900's so I'm finding some older coins. However, I've yet to find any silver. No rosies, no mercs, no no nothing. I'm sure it's a matter of time, but it baffles me why I can't pull up any silver. Any ideas?

I don't know what to tell you. I've found more silver coins in the first month than I did in three years with my Sovereign--in the same place I detected before. I use DISC 1 and full sensitivity. The high tone is usually fainter on the deep targets and it is smaller. That means you need good coil overlap each sweep. Don't ignore those faint sounds--they are the good ones. And if you really want more old stuff, dig all faint targets no matter what number ID. They give a quick signal, what I call short and sweet. Iron targets (and even some alum) are wider and don't have the crisp edges when pinpointing. It may have to do with your sweep speed. A quicker sweep for deep targets--recommended three feet per second, And ground balance over clean ground often. That may be the biggest factor that some people do not understand. If you have any discrimination on when balancing you do not know if you are over clean ground and if you balance over iron you will be way off and not know it because it was discriminated out. And of course you have to be where old coins were lost.

Silver and copper share a close conductivity. It should be just a matter of time. $20.00 in clad is not necessarily a lot of coins. I can get that easily in 5 hunts and often times with no silver or rings. You need to dig more coins, especially pennies. Getting selective targets like silver coins, silver rigs and gold rings is all about lots of popping or digging targets + location location location.

Statistically speaking, you are due for your first silver soon, considering the locations you hunt are giving up old coins. Don't get too frustrated.......metal detecting is a hobby, and hobbies are meant to be enjoyed! :)

Truly appreciate the feedback. Although I'm not getting the silver, this is a great hobby. I thoroughly enjoy the aspect of the next dig could be a fantastic find. Not getting frustrated at all, just was hoping to get ideas on how to improve my finds, and y'all gave me some good feedback. Hope to post that first silver soon. Thanks much!

It took me awhile to get my 1st silver too. If you are finding some wheats you are in the right area. It takes a little luck to. Keep at it and they will show up. HH

Also deep silver (probably all targets) runs lower ID number than air test. On my AT Gold air test silver dime is 85 but at 8-9 inches it is 82. Some say even lower.

Someone may have cherrypicked the obvious silver signals long ago, yet didn't take the time to concentrate on all the good stuff like Wheaties, Indians, and V nickels. If you are digging these coins, silver will come eventually. It'll pop up when you least expect it! Good luck...

Sounds like what we have in central FL.

100K...dang John!...That is a LOT of digging!
Congrats!

wmjstu...I went almost 2 years without silverwhen I first started detecting, because I was unwilling to dig what I believed were trash signals...Well, turns out some of them junk signals were Silver coins!!!
I hate to think how many I left in the ground???

HH,

The fact that you are both inquisitive and enthusiastic means the silver will come. Hang in there, keep asking questions and start thinking outside the box for good locations. Have you asked property owners for permission to hunt virgin ground?

Good luck comes to those who prepare and plan for it.

Location means a lot. We have very old parks around me that have been pounded though since metal detectors started being used. These areas are very hard to find much except modern drops in despite being old. Even hunting in the worst trash that drives off others will get some wheats and an occasional buffalo nickel. You have to find the little hunted areas or new ground if you're in a spot like that. Around here that ain't easy but not impossible. Other folks live in places with tons of opportunity, lucky dogs....
