Why in the world did they not make the 5X10 DD coil waterproof?

n/t

Some good silastic and a bit of water proof tape and your done. Can you believe I got blasted for giving that advice on another forum? It could void warranty I was told  But yeah, strange that it isn't water proof though to start with!
Why would you say its not water proof???
Minelab says it is not, Beale.

Why exactly I'm not sure, but I think it designed for Desert Prospecting and was a shell they already had in production.

From the git go it has a design not suited for water hunting, and I have a lot of hours using it in the water.

It's hollow which presents several challenges:

1. It floats, which means you could weigh it down with something like a sand filled sock, or Minelab could have made it an internally weighted coil(that would have made it less useful for land hunting). As it is when used in the water there are two factors that come into play. One.....constant downward pressure is needed to keep it under water, and the deeper the more pressure. After 5 or 6 hours of use you can really start to feel this along the top of your forearm. Two....when you find a target and go retrieve it with a shovel or scoop you have to use both hands. As the coil is a hollow elliptical shape it will pop to the surface and roll the detector on it's side. You have to be ready for this and make sure the control head doesn't hit the water when it flips.

2. Since the coil is not filled with an epoxy, you basically have an air filled balloon with water pressure on the outside that creates a pressure differential that will leak easily. There can also be a temperature differential from sunlight that can cause problems with sudden immersion in cold water, where a friction fit no longer has enough friction at the coil cable strain relief.

All the above being said, I waterproofed the coil and have used it a great deal for water hunting, because up till this year it was the best tool available for my purposes. Now I believe I will be using the 10.5 HF DD for beach/wading work in low trash situations and the little 6 inch HF DD for iron infested areas. During prototype testing of the 6 inch HF DD it was the Cat's meow in rocky stream beds, and is what I would use naturally of all the available X-Terra coils. If I were hunting gold bearing areas, I would probably have the elliptical on, and the 6 inch HF DD in a surplus canteen pouch for a change over if I were going to hunt a stream.

Hi everyone,

I ask Minelab a very similar question, and here was the response from Dick Shultz:

"Hi Darryl:

All of our

anybody that wants to waterproof a coil should go to the local hardware store and buy a product called LEXALL it is liquid lexan plastic.it stays flexable for 50 years or more.I have used it on diving gear that is used in salt water 100+feet.It will stick to anything but oil.So trust me on this.
