WHY I SMASHED MY MUSKETEER WHITH A HAMMER:rant:

I bouht it used ,but i soon found out it had problems . It would just stop working and make no sound then for no reason it would work again, i first thought it was the headphone jack, and sent it in to minelabe . That took one month and 70.00 dallers plus i had paid 325 used for it . got it back still had the problem thought it was the headphones . NO . so i used it whith no headphones sometimes it worked somdays not i dried replacing batterys , readjusting batterys still it would just all the sudden make a scratchy sound and go silent . now i know thats why some guy sold it and i got the problem .I could have sold it and described the problem but someone would have resold it as having no problem so the best thing for me to do was to smash it whith a hammer wich i did WATCH OUT FOR USED DETECTORS it may be thear is a reason somone is selling them .. Yes i liked the detector best ive ever used but i got tired of having it stop working in the middle of digging a target . the 15" wot coil worked great and i will keep it as i may find a used one that works somday

What a terrible shame, you got a bad machine but I am sure it could have been fixed correctly.
I had the similar problem and it WAS my (headphone jack}. If your phones were pulled out, the jack did not close properly and therefor sound was on and off.
Also with earphones in there was a loose wire inside the guys who fixed it may have missed that. What a shame..Just
thought it might help a bit but the hammer is a cure for sure....John...............

Same thing happened with my Garrett GTA 300 and yes it was the headphone jack. Intermittent problems like these are missed sometimes at the factory-I sent a Tesoro Silver Sabre back 4 times and they NEVER fixed it. Fortunately the dealer I bought it from traded for a Silver umax with accessories and I was happy. They let my Silver Sabre set overnight while turned on and the problem wouldn't reoccur until I got it outside and reused it. The dealer told me they FINALLY scrapped the insides and totally replaced the circuitry.

 OHHHH, this is funny but it's not funny!!!--Ya know what I mean?----Gunnar, I feel sorry for you but I feel MORE sorry for that poor detector!----I never got around to smashing one but there's been times when I wanted to wrap a couple of them around the nearest tree or fence post (while I was telling them off).----Everybody DOES talk to their detectors, don't they?----Getting back to Eltons question---does doing something like that (smashing the thing), make one feel better??? :) ---------Del

Yes i do feel better Its resolved now i can move on It was less hastle to smash than to fix i still got my frend the compadre

I would have given my best shot at fixing it, or even bought it for parts.
A Minelab bites the dust. Still have the shafts, arm rest?

ya i have all the knobs in good condition and the shaft and coils i just smashed that green thing inside to bits whith the hammer but befor that i was slapping the control box to see if i could get it to work again i was hitting it so hard i knocked it off the mount then later it just started to work again but i had enuff of it it got the hammer they are relly durable exept when somthing gets burned out inside needle in a hay stakk to figure out would just be nice to have one that worked no more relic hunting for me just park hunting whith the compadre

I had 3 Musketeers and 2 colts thru the years, and ever one that I had did bout what You describe at one time or nother, and on alla mine it was the wires was broke or makin bad contact in the coupling that screws on the box , hooks the coil wire to the box, hadda take em apart, and re work the wires, tough job for a geezer to do, sometimes it would break the wires fore I even got done, I liked the detectors, just hated that connector, and the LIL Bitty wires inside= I don't have no Minelab stuff no more, can't afford the repairs, or aggravation:detecting:

No I,m not madd at the compadre its very reliable Ha Ha that is a good one ,

There are connectors where the coil plugs into the control housing and where the headphones plug in. If you ever run into this type of problem with a detector, first thing is to try a different coil. You can get moisture into a coil and it will drive your detector nuts. Also, it is possible for the coil to develop an internal short or intermittent open circuit. Then try different headphones. If no help then use deoxit on all connectors including the ones for the batteries (the connectors will surface oxidize in time and not make good, solid contact even though they look fine). This is a good idea as a part of an annual "checkup" even if you aren't having any problems with your detector. Finally, check for loose/broken wires or cold solder connections on the connectors and the circuit board. You just blew three hundred bucks. Sure hope you don't get mad at your wife....or me!

i think i found out what the problem was . a fine member of this fourum sold me a new control box , and when i hooked it up it was silent so i put the rechargable battery pack in he sent and it worked fine so i looked closer at the alkaline pack and one of the things that the batters push against was out to far so i pushed it back down and it woked just fine so what i think was happening was the battery pack just lost contact and would make that scratchy sound and quit and them sometimes it would just work again now once i narrow it down i can remidy it

No i dont golf , this is the smashed control housing , It was not the problem to bad for me , It was the battery pack thear are two contacts on eather side of the batterys one was out of place so if your musketeer is going silent look at the battery pack just a small mall adjustment can cause problems

Ouch that hurts.

I did that to a shop vac last fall. Busted that pile to pieces by the time I was done with it. Frustration level was high that day. Do not miss that vac a bit.

I tried to fix it and or like it for about 3 years. Se la vi
