Why I love my new/old Compass Judge 2...

REVIER

Well-known member
Picked this thing up for $10 for one reason only...iron infested sites.
Still getting the hang of it, (don't really have a clue, yet), but I think I managed to set it up to be pretty useful.

This is a T-R unit...Transmit/Receive...and the advantage of these types is their ability to see through iron.
I know a lot of the modern detectors can do this to a certain extent, but I am not sure they can work this well around this much iron.

Depth isn't great, maybe about 3-4 inches, but I still might be able to find a few things in iron laden sites and it sure will be fun trying

This one was made around the early 70's and is about 100KhZ...a gold sniffer supreme if it works in the field like this test, and every gold ring I have found so far were at depths still within range of this cool unit.

I also have a 71B unit but I haven't gotten that one to work, yet, I think it's just a battery wire fix.
From what I understand, the 77B is the one to have because it does what this Judge can do but much deeper so I am on the lookout for one of these.

Sometimes, older technology still works...and works well!

I took out out for a spin at the local park this morning.
You know what...it finds metal!

I was able to adjust the threshold to a manageable level, and I was even able to get it to a sort of silent search mode where it only went off over a high conductive target.
It did null out over some iron with the threshold present so that part works correctly.

Still messing around with the controls which don't seem to work real well, but maybe a shot or two of contact cleaner will help.

These good targets were shallow, but some trash I dug like some foil and can slaw was several inches deep.
Some large cans were even deeper.

One thing I did not like was the weight.
Way heavier than anything else I have swung before, but the box is all metal with 12 AA batteries installed so that was to be expected.

At the right kind of site with iron nails galore, I think this could still be effective.

The judge 2 is basically the same as the 77b ,to get better depth if i can remeber the controls on one turn the ground ajust all the way h,i also i run my 77 with the controll volume all the way hi as far as it goes just turn the volume down on my phones .The older deepth masters systems work good on them to.

Thanks!
Still learning, but I love learning new things, and playing with new/old detectors.

...Revier...there is a toggle switch on your Judge 2...select the STD mode which basically puts the detector into a 77B mode....I get good depth on mine...about 7 inches on a silver dime...but I suspect mine is an enhanced model......there is another toggle switch marked Manual/Auto..I use it in the Manual position...if you need to use Discrimination ...set the Discrimination Knob low like on 2...use it in the Std mode and then switch and check it out on the Discrimation setting....No Target Masking in the STD mode and it will Null on small iron...very good for Relic Hunting and for sites that are really iron nail infested......Joe

Thank you!

I am sure I will be asking you some questions in the future.
