Went out today to a playground with wood chips and I would get a hit (I have Ace 250), get it pinpointed and start looking. After I did not find anything at the depth it said, I would check again and I would not get a hit again. This happened about 6-7 times and I was starting to get pretty upset. Thought it was my batteries, but the battery indicator says they are still half charged, but maybe not correct. Could this be it or something else? Thanks for the help.

Try turning your sensitivity down 1 notch if this happens again.

Try going in the field (sod, grass) and detect their to see how the ACE is handling it there.
Could be halos of metal left in the wood chips from rusted iron(metal).
How old is the wood chips area.?
They also use rubberized mats between the soil and the wood chips with metal underpinning to hold the mats level and firm.
Could be those metal pins giving you grief.
I've had similar problems in the past...

possible. I dug under the chips and hit gravel. Not sure if there is something under that or not. The gravel was about 6" down
