why does Pro custom iron on hear more iron than Pro zero 0 iron?

I'm running my Pro custom at iron 31 and pro zero at 0 iron and pro custom with iron on, the iron is much louder and seems to hear more iron than Pro zero 0 iron. Why is that? Pro zero the iron sound is much milder.

Hi Rick, The difference is the fantastic Iron Audio of the At Pro. You are hitting fairly close to the modes I use. I run my Disc at 40 when in the custom mode with Iron Audio on mainly to keep the break points between low and mid tones the same as Pro Zero - 00. In places, the Iron Audio in the Pro Mode will pick up on rust specks or whatever in the ground. A lot of the locations around here are quiet enough so I can run with Iron Audio on much of the time but when it gets too chatty, I switch to Pro Zero and it runs a lot smoother and I still can listen to it all. Long winded answer to your question. The short answer is response time :)

Why would one want to hear all the iron targets in the ground?. What advantage does it give us to hear iron?.

Where to start. A big reason is I do not like having my eyes glued to the VDI meter. Three tones helps sort things out. If it is a high tone, dig. :) Another is that Iron Audio has faster response from target to target. A coin right next to a nail or other junk. The bottle cap roll tone is more pronounced with the Iron Audio on. That is also a characteristic of zinc pennies. I have had two coins side by side with both giving same tones but one much louder than the other indicating that one is deeper. Coin spills are a real treat of rapid sounds. I don't claim to be an expert because I learn something every time I go out with the At Pro. I have always tended to hunt with minimal discrimination on all the detectors I have used. The At Pro fits right into the way I like to hunt. Now in some areas there is just too much iron junk and having Iron Audio on is just a constant machine gun like chatter, so I will switch to Pro Zero with Iron Audio off. I can still listen to the entire range of tones. How I run it really depends on the ground that I am trying to cover.

Jerry, you hunt the same way I do,

Rick, with the iron on 31, you are discriminating all the stuff below 31, at 0 it's like hunting in all metal

So Pro zero, iron is disc'ed at 40 when iron disc is set at 0? Pro custom you can adjust iron from 0-40 and could hunt in all metal, right? Which makes Pro custom with iron at 31 better than Pro zero when hunting in iron?

Just trying to make sure I have it right.

Thanks,
Rick

Hi Rick, I think of it more as setting where the break point between low and mid tones appears. Pro Zero,00, Iron Audio off will give you the same break point as Pro Custom, Disc 40 and Iron Audio turned on. Either way you hear the entire range of tones so with these settings there is no real Discrimination since the low tone are still being heard. Custom just gives you the Iron Audio.

Now you do not have to use 40 as a break point and it will work the same as long as you have it set the same between Zero and Custom. I just happen to like 40 because it gives more equal splits between the three tones. The disadvantage of using a setting of 31 for Disc is the Zero Mode will not retain these settings after you turn the detector off. I use it because I am lazy and set the Custom Mode to the Zero Mode defaults :)

BTW, the illustration on Pg 25 of the At Pro manual shows pretty much how the very first silver coin I found with the AT was situated. The coin was about six inches and the nail 1 1/2 inch above it. Heard both high and low tones on each swing and they reversed order on the back swing. Hi to Low and Low to Hi.

Hope this helps

Jerry

I haven't hunted much yet, but I prefer to hunt Pro Zero. I've tried different settings, but trying to remember what the different sounds mean for each setting was too much; I prefer the consistency of learning one setting for now.

However, I'll turn the iron audio off if the area is full of junk and giving me too many signals. (I normally don't mind all the information I'm hearing, but at times it can be a bit much.) Then it is an easy matter to hit one button and toggle the iron audio back on to sometimes help me identify what I'm hearing such as bottle caps.

I'm likely leaving some goodies behind, but in some areas I try not to dig too much. When dug properly, the grass is surprisingly resilient, but it can handle only so much.
