Why do we find so many old belt buckles,

jabbo

New member
did they all fall off belts many years ago. I never heard anyone these days say the buckle fell off my belt.

Hi jabbo; Clothing material was "very" cheaply made back then.If you notice the buckles usually are in good shape but there is rarely any materials on them. Cloth was not made according to so callled "Industry Standards." They didn't have any. Also it took a bit of hard work to make buckles back then because they were pretty much handmade literally so it was a rough thing o lose a buckle.Thats why buckles were made to "last" so to speak. I hope this helps. PEACE:RONB

Or maybe they're not belt buckles, but from dog collars.

HUH?????----I STILL use a house & haven't lost my buckle (at least lately). -----Did you mean--"horses"?

Hi Folks; No, Buckles were used for all kinds of things. On clothing they had hat buckls, Shoulder buckles, Chest buckles, Belt buckles , Knee buckles, ankle buckles and shoe buckles. Why???? I don't know but they were "crazy" about buckles. The metal they were made from and even their syles served to denote a persons wealth or position in society.Just like buttons. They were made of iron, brass, silver, gold or silver or gold gilted. They had numerous designs on them from floral designs to military signifigant designs.Acorns, Sunflowers and pineapples were the very early designs. Military designs came around later and were usually very crude. They were usually rudimentary in nature having only a simple number or symbol denoting the persons rank or regiment. Although buckles were used for amnimals such as dogs, horses, cows or sheep they were used much more heavily used for personal reasons. I hope this helps.I am sure there are some exceptions to these insights but I'm not writing a thesis on buckles ok. Good Hunting. PEACE:RONB

Haven't found one yet LOL

The closest I ever came to finding a gold buckle was in an old rodeo grounds a couple of years ago.---It was a silver AND gold buckle 2" long X 1 1/2" high with beautiful, intricate design.---It was only 2-3 inches deep when I recovered it.---Due to its small size, I think it's a "girl buckle" (cowgirls buckle). :)----Also, don't think it is ALL that old, but hey, it's 'mine all mine".-----You're right jabbo, it's amazeing how many buckles these detectors find.----My wife & I have recovered many, many & of all sizes (over the years).------Same goes for keys--detectors really find A LOT of keys!----If you have them out where you can see them, you realize just how many (buckles & keys) detectors actually do locate.-----My wife has a wire hangng in our shop with all the (common) keys on the wire that we have found (over the years).----She has the end of the wire so we can take it loose & ad keys to the group as we find them.-----I can't tell you how many keys is on that wire---hundreds--(found over the years).----They don't have any real value but boy do they make a good conversation piece!  ---------Del

Believe i read somewhere that a well dressed gentleman in colonial times would have 8 buckles on at one time between shoe,knee,belt..etc.....lotta buckles to fall off:yikes:

Curt--That's VERY interesting!--I had never heard that before.---That, right there, would explain alot of the lost buckles! :)-----We find a lot of them (buckles) out here in the west to.---Seems like they are just all over (lost buckles), doesn't it?---------Del

Hi Folks; Curt is right. They were crazy about them.I don't know of any solid gold buckles but they were gold gilted.I do find those but never found a solid gold one; YET.!!!!! I'll keep trying though. PEACE:RONB

i found a nice 1920's silver buckle and the loops and end piece with ruby's in the buckle but my ex brother in law stole part of my collection and that buckle was in there. i still have the loops but the buckle is gone.
