Why do some CZ3D users use the salt mode......

for hunting on land....in parks and ball fields for example.Would the discriminator performance be affected by such an application? Have any of you guys done this...share your results or tips....thanks.

I believe running in salt mode in areas that are newer ( ie, may not hold older coins ), the 3D in that mode wont ID some of the aluminum and other trash as high tone. These types of targets may hit as high tone in enhanced mode, but mid tone in salt mode.

Salt mode IDs differently than Enhanced mode...in particular the evil zinc penny.
Since Indian Head and Zinc tend to ID the same, Enhanced mode high tones both of them.
If you think you might be in an IH penny (and some of the other rarer denominations) area, there's just no way you're getting out of digging zincs. :(

Salt mode pushes the zinc back down in ID...but also does the same to IH.
Use the salt mode in a playground when you feel you'll go postal if you dig one more !@#$ zincoln.

Important note: Salt mode also reduces sensitivity somewhat. Don't use it if you're looking for deep/old coins.

Ive never had a reason to run any of my CZ's in salt mode.If I'm hunting a newer area I just opt for a different detector. The CZ's were made to find old coins and they do it very well.

I use it all the time. I'll hunt an older part of a park (in Enhanced) until I'm tired, then hit the playgrounds (in Salt mode) on the way out for coins/jewelry.
The CZ's are certainly made for coins, but they excel at gold rings, too. :)

I thought that running in salt mode would discriminate out some small gold that the normal mode would pick up.

Salt mode does slightly change the range/tone IDs of the items.
But if you run with high discrimination, you're missing gold already, regardless of the mode.
(especially if you discriminate out Foil)

But just as as importantly (especially if you're looking for micro-gold like gold ear studs), it's not as sensitive and won't detect as deeply.

For the areas I hunt for gold rings, that's not a problem.

Hope that helps,
mike

Salt mode will separate zinc pennies & IH pennies from silver coins & copper pennies while the enhance mode is designed for older silver in areas before 1950, an environment with less aluminum iron trash & rusty nails. Although pull tabs - square tabs will register as nickels and aluminum can slaw depending on size will register as silver high tones. Rusty nails will also come in as a high tone & register as silver. Really have not seen any difference on the tones in either salt or enhance modes. I only used the 10" coil one time because it will hit targets very deep.

Not only does the 10 1/2" coil hit them deep,it has an uncanny ability to hit coins on edge.

Plain and simple in enhanced mode picks up the zinc penny ...in salt mode zinc will not register as a dime or quarter...just depends where you are hunting which mode you use...
