why band pass or high filter??

What is the difference between band pass and high filter, i don't understand the difference between the five to twelve settings. can someone help me to understand this because my brain cannot work it out very well. I will appreciate an explanation from anyone. Thanks.
 
A BAND pass filter passes a group of signals within a certain range, and attenuates signals on either side of that range.

A HIGH pass filter passes a group of signals within a certain range, and attenuates signals below that range.

A lower filter number is more suitable to slower sweeps and may get a little better depth. Higher filters may help with recovery. High pass is less sweep speed sensitive while bandpass cuts EMI better.

Modern VLF detectors use filters to separate the target responses from the ground response. Filters are also used to minimize EMI noise. The best filter to use depends on the strength of ground mineralization plus other factors.

ROB: Most programs use the 5Hz Band pass filter as the default.

This is the best overall choice for low-to-moderate mineralization, has good EMI rejection, and allows for a slower sweep speed while still working well with faster sweep speeds. In extreme or highly variable mineralization The V3I can have more chatter when sweeping the loop, in this case a higher filter may help.
Rob I thought most programs uses the 10 band pass filter. So is it true now 5 band pass is the best for overall choice for low-to-moderate mineralization?
 
Somewhere along the line White's changed the factory programs from 10 to 5 but I don't know when. :shrug:
 
Ok thanks Rob and Larry, as matter of fact I have read of-course a bit about filters but I needed to take an experts advice in case some one could give some. Thanks again.
 
Each situation is different ///the ground, the emi, the trash , whats close to your machine..cell towers etc..
Use the sweep and the ground probe to tell you..

Ground balance often......
 
So far, I've never had a use for high pass but it would be nice to hear what others who have used it has to say for those specific conditions. martin

I personally use the 5 band pass most of the time but as I look at the program defaults I see the 10 band pass as the default for most programs. I'm confused this is from the Whites manual.

The confusion comes because of the Vx3 and V3i. The V3i showed most programs with the 10 filter. The Vx3 shows the 5 filter. The V3i has the deeper programs like Hi Pro, Deep Silver, and Mixed Pro using the 5 filter.

The post was started by a VX3 user. Many of us have changed from the factory 10 filter to the 5 filter as we have done better. Use the high if possible and band if too noisy.
