I am new to the hobby; I just retired after many years with the city, and for many years I wanted to get into detecting and now I have the time.
First of all I want to thank all of you for helping me without you even knowing it; I have been reading all the posts and have learned a lot from everyone and have had many questions answered. This forum and the people on it is one of the best I have seen. I have just got a MXT and finally learned the machine. It is easy to use but to really use it you got to know it very well just like any other. For certain uses it will do good, but I wanted something else that I could use locally that was good and simple to use as some younger ones would be also useing it. Enter the ACE-250. After reading about them I had to have one, but got very depressed because it seems like there is none around. I did find one (thanks to your forum)and it will be here next Friday, (thanks)
I did much research into the laws here and couldn't find any. It seems like Arizona likes to bury things like that.
BUT NOW THE DEPRESSION STARTS.
My problem, I have finally found the state laws (after months of searching) I became very depressed as Arizona says that you need a permit to do anything on state land but also states that "no metal detectors on state land" and no permits for them. As I understand as they said it seems that there afraid of someone finding a fossil or something that would be buried forever until the state sell the land and a housing development comes in and destroys it. Now I even need a permit to "ride my quad or bike or even walk on state land" and no paintballs, ??? where I used to go riding by bike they have a paintball court on state land!. I guess that they did it! with out firing a shot like they said they would, and I guess Arizona's detector sales are almost non existent now. The city of Phoenix says "no detectors" but you can use one but no digging??????.
Why should I be depressed, after killing myself for the city for many years saving the city millions of dollars through my career and now getting cut down. But I do have an anti depressant and that is I used to work for the city and I know alot of people in alot of departments and I can at some parks got the ok to use a detector and also only dig in certain areas, plus I know a few people that will let me use a detector on there property.
I am sorry for being long winded and as i should not use this forum as a vent for anger, in all, you are lucky so far and I do want to thank everyone as I said above. Once again thanks. And I will find away to be happy and pursue my new hobby. It does seem like this state is only interested in getting the revenue $$$ and saying that they do so much for the people, the USSR said the same, and the same also goes for the city of Phoenix.
p.s. I have heard and read about and agree with the detector's code, and will always go by it, even if it's out in the middle of nowhere. I will always leave an area as I found it minus the trash. It is also nice to see another Ham radio operator, I am a general class, I did look you up on the arrl site. 73's, and your licence needs to be renewed.

To everyone once again thanks so very much.... n7kkj

Bummer. My parents live in Lake Havasu and I was planning on moving down there in a few years to care for them.

Hang in there bud, it'll work out. There are a couple of guys on another forum who live in Phoenix and have no problems detecting anywhere. I used to live in Phoenix many years ago and you could do anything then, even walk down Central Ave. with a gun hanging on your hip. Somebody must have ruined that place.

There ain't a whole lot of state land in Arizona, most of it is Indian Reservation. Tesoro Detectors used to be in Phoenix but are now in Prescott. They sell detectors in Arizona.

They have those rules in most all states when it comes
to state land. But it kinda varies a bit. I don't think
things will be quite as grim as you think. I'd find some
locals and see where they go. In most all states, state
and national parks are off limits. Some national forests
are ok though..But you always want to check to make sure.
Some of the harder core of the enforcement types have been
known to take your gear in the state and natl. parks.
Not sure if you mean me, "ham" but I've still got to Dec to
renew. It's a vanity call, and I imagine I'm going to
have to fork over some money again... Not sure what they
are charging these days. I paid $30 when I got it, then
it went to $50 later, then back down real low to below $20,
and who knows now... I'm hoping it's still fairly cheap.
Actually, I don't think they should charge a fee for renewal
vanity calls, but it was worth it.. IE: there are many "old"
vanity calls where they don't have to pay.

Hello NM5K,
I have been retired for a year and 2 months and I am having the time of my life. I bought myself an ACE 250 and a GTP 1350 an I can't decide which one I like the best. I am teaching my grandchildren how to use the 250.
Last month I found my first Civil War relic, a General Service Uniform Button, Yankee of course, however I wouldn't take $500.00 for it. I have found nearly 800 coins of which about 50-75 are pre-1960.
Here in VA the law says "NO Metal Detectors" on state property, however I ask for and get permission in nearly every park we camp in as long as I stay in the park. It is amazing how easy it is to get permission as long as you ask first. Don't get discouraged, just keep asking.
PS If you are ever in VA, look me up,maybe we can find a Civil War Cache, It is believed the Confederates buried a small fortune in gold here somewhere in the valley.
Your Friend,
John D.

Thanks for the encouragement, the city says no, but!, some city employees OK it and some say OK but no digging and the just plain no. State trust land is closed now for everything, as there worried about dust. fortunately I know lots of people that will let me on there properties which will keep me busy for awhile and along with some parks quite awhile.
I can't wait until the ACE comes, I'm dieing to try it. and if everything goes good I'm thinking on getting a higher end Garrett's machine.I did find out that I really love this hobby.

Bout the only place thats off limits around here is the National Forests/Parks. I even got permission to hunt around our Courthouse thats been here since the late 1800's. The only thing they asked at the courthouse is that I wait till after hours or the weekends so I dont distrub and trials or cases going on, Which I can totally understand. The head guy at our local state park loves seeing me in the fall....there is always one particular water main they can never find cause the rain always washes the dirt and gravel over it. I stop in there around the first of Oct. and find it for him and he lets me have the run of the park. Dont even have to pay the 4.00 park fee :) So I guess just hang in there and it will get better.
