Why are there RED dots to left of some subjects.?

on main page? theres 4 posts with RED dots.
the rest of the posts have little ?( cartoon talk bubbles)
Ive never noticed them before

Red dots only mean messages are new to you and not yet read,click on "forum read" to clear them out. John....

I dont know , I do have terrible internet.
But , I seem to see red dots on posts Ive read, and some I havent read.
Some I've replied to and some that I havent
Some are there from days ago, and some current. ????
Thats why I couldnt figure it out.
