Why an 8' search coil cable?

Plugcutter

New member
We all know Tesoro offers coils with 3' and 8' cable lengths. I've been looking for 5x10 ellipticals tonight, and every single one I've found has been in the 8' length. I've also looked in vain for a four-pin 3x18 CSC, in ANY cable length.

I'm baffled as to why anyone would want an 8-foot cable, so I'm assuming I'm missing something really obvious to everyone else...??? Do people detect with six- and seven-foot rods? Do some folks like to wind up a big coil, to make an RFI choke perhaps?

Why an 8' coil cable?

(I hope this isn't a double post - my first attempt seemed to disappear)

makes it hip mountable, chest mountable..etc.. Accessorie belt bag..

Same thing here. I've been looking for the Delta 8" concentric and all anyone has is 8-ft cable. I could deal with it if I have to but I really don't want to. It makes field swapping coils a pain.

Hi Plugcutter, Elton is right on about the longer cable being needed for Hip Mounting. A few years back when I bought my 10X 5 for my Tejon, Tesoro had used the 10x5 mostly on the Lobo and had not to my recollection sold many 10X5 for the "Hot"series and there was a bit of a run on them when they offered them for that series. Many if not most of the 10x5 that showed up everywhere had the longer cord on them. I bought mine form a dealer, who in turn had to get it from the factory . I told him I did not want the extra weight of the long cord and he said If I wanted I could request the short cord and they would shorten it for me , but it would take a day or so extra getting it to me. No big deal so that is what I did. There was no extra cost either and it would have been worth it any way to shed the extra weight. Anyway If you are getting it from a dealer I bet he can manage a short cable for you if you ask, and if so for a charge it will be worth it! HH, Charlie

I found out that Tesoro did not manufacture the Delta 8 CC with a 3-foot cable, at least it's not listed on their web site.

Thanks for the information - it never even occurred to me that I might be able to get one from Tesoro directly, through a dealer. Doh!

Good luck on the 3 foot cable version if you're trying to find a 5x 10 elliptical, I looked long and hard but ended up with an 8 foot as well. Works fine but it sure is a lot of cable wrapped around the pole of my Tejon.

I no longer wrap my coil cables around the pole for two reasons...1) Saves time when switching out coils and 2) Less repeated flexing and stressing of the coil cable itself over time. Instead I secure the cable straight up the pole then "lasso loop" the excess and connect to control box with minimum flex at the connection. This method also works great with the shorter 3' cable:thumbup:

That's interesting - I'm pretty sure I know what you're doing but I'd love to see a picture of it, if that's convenient ...

Plugcutter I'll try and see if I can figure out a way to get a pic for you:thumbup: I haven't posted a pic in years and those were on a relic forum I use to frequent.

I just bought the 5.3/4 with the 8' cable I also got lower pole . I made a small coil of the extra cable just big enough to go over the pole lock then bring it to middle of upper pole then duck tape that coil of extra cable together by running a piece of tape thru the coil of cable then use Velcro to hold in place . When you are done the extra coil of cable will be 6 to 7" from box.
