I've been hunting area's I've already hunted and have found plenty of these coins in them but I've yet to find any with the explorer. Could it be I'm over looking them or have I not yet passed the coil over any yet? Any and all ideas are well recieved from the newbie to the explorer.
Best Regards,
Ray

Ray;
First what settings are you using?
Second if you have some of these coins do an air test just to get the sound of IH and nickels
if you have discriminated out pulltabs you will miss nickels and probably some of the IH

Hey SilverFinder,
I have been using Mike Moutray's settings along with a 7.5 inch minelab coil. (I think a link to these settings may be found on this forum.) Using these settings, I regularly find indian head pennies. They have a low sounding pitch as compared to wheat pennies and silver coins. To me, the indian head penny signals sound like repeatable, warbeling, lower-than-wheat penny pitched signals. As for old nickels, I never find them either. I don't find them because I don't dig signals that have a pitch lower than indian head pennies. Since nickels have such a low pitch, I am probably passing over them. I don't like nickels because they usually come out looking cruddy.

If your areas aren't that trashy then perhaps you already got most of them. I've rehunted "clean" areas that I previously pounded with my first machine and the only coins left were very deep, next to trash, or on edge. Most machines do well in clean areas.
Indians and old nickels are a little more difficult to get than copper and silver coins. Don't expect a locked on tone for indians - many times they bounce horizontally left to right over half the screen. Look for that type of movement for targets over 6" deep. Buffalos are the same thing - they bounce back and forth a lot over the "nickel" slot. It takes some practice but if they're still there you should find them.

I've found 11 Indians so far this year though. Only one nickel though (1902 "V") I dug it because it was so deep I thought it was probably a goodie. When I suspect a nickel, I switch to digital and look for a 5 to 7. Last year the only goodie nickel I found was an 1866 Shield.
