Whoops....I thought it was gold

I set up my electrolysis unit yesterday and was very encouraged when I saw the results of the first two ( silver ) rings. So I thought I'd clean up that nice little gold ring as well........ the water turned very black and so did the ring. I guess it wasn't gold after all!

I was hoping to find some marks after I cleaned it up a bit ..... now I'll never know ( by the way, how do you clean your gold ? )

Gold gets a bath in the ultrasonic. Be careful with rings with stones though, especially berils(emeralds), as they can be damaged by the ultrasonic. Diamonds and rubies are usually OK, but only for a short soak, as the stones can be loosened in their settings, savvy?

most of the gold i"v found has been clean & the ones that weren't were bands so a quick clean with a rag did the trick

Thanks, I worked out that bit about the stones too .... my ring started with 4 out of five little sparkling gems ( wishful thinking said maybe diamonds? ) but after the clean I'm down to two! Not to worry, it's all a learning curve & I won't make that mistake again. Now I've just got to get out and find another " gold " ring to work on!
