Say hello to a new MXT user!!! Just bought a Whites MXT with a Super 12 coil and headphones on eBay for 500. Hope I got a good deal. I can't wait for what's to come. I used to be a DFX owner but had to sell it for financial reason but never really got the hang out it. I will be doing mainly beach hunting (zero black sand) and park hunting!

[size=medium]the 12" might be good for the beach but for the parks i say be sure to get the 5.3 coil and the D2 DD coil. just my opinion.it also may prove helpful to get "The MXT Edge", by jeff foster. mr. mxt everything ya need to know about the mxt and then some.

I have the super 12, or 300mm, coil too and it is by far the bench warmer of all my coils. I used it maybe twice in a big field without much impression. It has its place I'm sure, what I'm not sure about is where. I guess it covers more ground but if coverage is your thing, a big DD fills the bill PERFECTLY. My 10" D2 coil might as well be permenantly glued onto my machine because its my new favorite. The stock 950 was HEAVILY used until I got my D2. Both are amazing and very different from each other. I did an air test with both and the D2 had about 1/2 inch advantage over the 950 on most targets. Depth AND seperation goes to the D2! I cannot attest to any depth comparisions in the field because you NEVER know how the other coil would have responded on 'said' target unless you try both out before digging, which I never tried.

One note about the D2, it VDI's high on some targets. ALL coins VDI normally but bottle caps that would normally VDI about +50 will read about +70 to +85 using the D2. I have dug MANY bottle caps that showed up with solid bars saying its a QUARTER. Once you get used to the D2 you can still tell many of the nickels from pulltabs and not miss coins.(pulltabs jump around on the VDI scale while nickels stay at a given VDI) The end result is that you dig more holes but I am convinced that is a good thing, lots of good stuff reads as junk using OTHER coils but just so happen to VDI a bit higher with the D2 and I dig them. For example, a deep crusty penny might VDI around +50 with a concentric coil(950, ect) but the D2 VDI's high and that deep crusty penny reads where it normally should +70 to +74. If your in a good old location, both examples SHOULD be dug anyways.

Congrats on your new purchase. You're going to love that machine. HH, Nancy

I say partially because I don't know where you live, the type of site or terrain you hunt, or the type of targets you are hunting for.

The MXT is definitely a very able detector to handle most any hunting task, but the 12" coil might be the limiting factor. I have and use the 12" coil that came on my MXT Pro, and have used it before with my standard MXT's. For me, the 12" coil is handy for some beach hunting and for some relic hunting, mainly when working large, open fields or wooded areas. I also use the 12" coil when I am looking for larger-size targets, such a brass railroad locks, etc.

It is my 3rd most used coil. The 950 is my 2nd most used and actually what I grab first at more open areas. I seldom, very seldom, use a DD coil. Instead, my #1 use coil is the 6

Monte's right on. I agree with his opinions on the coils and IMHO the MXT is one of the most usable, versatile detectors available. Especially with the different coil options. You're going to enjoy your outings with this machine.
