who here uses the Elite model Sov?

Neil

Well-known member
Last night I was testing the one I just got and I found out the variable/fixed tone switch is indeed tied into the all metal mode. I did not remember it this way, its been awhile since Ive used an Elite.
Has anyone found any benefit to using one of the settings over the other in all metal?
Or perhaps if someone has one of the older Sovs that has the same option?

Neil,on my Elite I have used the fixed tone mode to search in some parks. The advantage, steady tones in the mid to low target range doesn't hesitate with a burb or null like tone, the meters still ID targets as usual. The disadvantage in this mode now unable to ID targets with tones. The characteristics isn't like all metal mode responds the same as in discrimination mode but without tone ID.At first I couldn't see the purpose, but after using the non tone mode in a couple of searches could see this as a useful tool in some circumstances.I have used and owned three different GTs and the whole Sovereign lineup and now find the Elite my favorite Sovereign model. Hope this helps.HH Ron

Ron thanks for your input. Ive never really hunted in the fixed tone setting but will definetly be giving it a try now. I was gonna box this Elite away but this really has me curious.
For me the GT has several settings/adjustments I dont care for in my hunting like silent search(tried many times and see no advantage to that), iron mask on/off, the all metal track/fixed(do not care for the response that gives).
So the Elite is actually a little more like the older XS, it has what you use and thats all. I can see why it would be someones favorite Sov model.

My brother Kevin in Virginia had a XS and Elite and took both in the field to compare. He told me, which I took it with a grain of salt that the Elite was hitting targets the XS didn't see. After using the Elite I suspect it does have more sensitivity than the XS.Sir, I think you and Bling are correct the Elite is the best of both worlds with these two models blended.LOL it does take time to find the volume control at first. Thanks HH Ron

I got one of the first GT made being a dealer and felt it was quite different compared to the Elite I had. Besides the extra toggle switches and the controls back where we were used to them on the older Sovereigns I found that the GT was more sensitive as I seen more falsing on iron and also my signals were much stronger. Some of the deeper targets I seem to get a better audio on and some were deeper then I thought they would be with the audio I was getting. This was the biggest complaint I had on the Elite was switching from a XS2 that the 2 different Elites I had the signals were never as deep as the audio said it was. To me I did OK with the Elite, but not as well as I did with the older Sovereigns and the GT and felt that being Minelab didn't make the Elite very long before the GT that there was a reason they switched to the GT. I felt the circuit board on the Elite was only used on the Elite, but never took one apart to compare them. Like I say this is my opinion from many different actual hunts.

I have used other Sovereign models and prefer the Elite. I like the newer battery set-up and it has the single/multiple toggle. I only use the single tone when pinpointing (in disc mode)....especially helps on targets that fall in between tones and yet has meter ID

Thanks for the input. The fixed tone/variable toggle is something Im gonna play around with. The newer battery setups are a nice improvement:thumbup:

I LOVE my Elite!!! It tears the beaches up in all metal no disc variable modes. I like the variable tone mode becaus in all metal the tones "seem" to work in reverse of the disc mode variable. Iron still nulls but bottle caps hit with a high tone and quarters and such hit low and gold is still about in the middle but the tones "sound" different somehow... I am able to hit on faint targets in all metal that doen't even appear in disc due to depth. The Elite was a winner, too bad the changed it and then stopped making the line completely ;(
