Who favors concentric over DD coils and has it opened up finds at your beaten-to-death hunting locations?

Just curious for those that have used both (DD and concentric) extensively in the field why you tend to favor the concentric coil?

How about opening your beaten-to-death hunting areas? Did bolting on a concentric coil make these areas come alive again?

I feel as hunters ( at least to me) we are very focused on the detector itself and (other than the size of coil used) give little credit to the design (concentric vs DD)

Look forward to your response.

I have always preferred concentric coils. They are more accurate at identifying target's conductivity in the first 6", especially bottle caps. They are very accurate at pinpointing off the front inner coil, and give you a good guess of depth, with the inner coil's sudden audio shut off when pinpointing with the pin point button pushed on. What I mean, is that a shallow target's audio will abruptly stop when the inner coil passes past the target. A deeper target has a slight delay.

I use both types of coils, sometimes the choice is dictated by what detector/s you use and what i mean by that is when using my T2 this machine will only run DD coils, also my IDX Pro for the most part all the coils that are available are Concentric with the exception of a very small elliptical factory coil,so with some models one is restricted or basically dictated on what options are available.

Slightly better Depth and better Discrimination and also pinpointing are the main selling point advantages with concentric coils,so do i use them ?? specific sites can be the decision makers for coil choice,if i am on say a really trashy roman/saxon site then the weapon of choice would be a smaller concentric coil on say a older Whites or Tesoro based machine as these are often seen as legendary machines in these types of environment, also being deeper by design Concentric coils can be used for deeper detecting on pasture sites or taking advantage of real deep ploughing.

It was mentioned in the opening post about can it open up 'beaten-to-death hunting areas' my reply it certainly can do and for a reasonable amount of money,a classic example that i will use,i have a Whites IDX Pro which runs at 6.59khz give or take and came as standard with the 9.5'' Concentric coil, these machines are out of production these days so can be picked up pretty cheaply, but most folks add the smaller 5.3 coil and use them on junk infested sites,so that is 2 scenarios cover normal detecting and trashy sites, but a 3rd scenario can be added as i also bought a new 15'' Concentric coil from Whites for a very reasonable price but this then turns the detector into a very deep machine and when i mean deep its pretty amazing but i will also mention that this 15'' coil is massively heavy and i use a small sling too take the weight, and all this from using a older machine that can be picked up dirt cheap. So yes Concentric coils certainly can have a massive advantage.

Most folks that have been around detecting for some time can vouch the discriminating advantages of a concentric coil on a Tesoro machine, although they will still work with a DD coil the best option for maximum discrimination advantage has always been when using a Concentric coil especially a smaller coil than the stock one. Some of my best finds from years ago have been taken with a Tesoro/Laser detector with a small concentric coil on,especially on trashy iron infested roman sites which can have alot of 'iron hobnails' from the boots/sandals that they wore,.

I still have a soft spot for concentric coils and one of my all time favourites is the Whites DFX and the 12'' Hotshot coil,a real joy when using this combination on open pasture, although a 12'' coil being foam filled its as light as a feather but pretty deep as well due too it being a Concentric but this coil has all the Concentric traits and advantages but alsohas some DD characteristics as well.

Its nice to have a selection of Concentric and DD coils in your detecting arsenal if possible.

I like both. Funny but there was a day back a few decades ago when Concentrics ruled the day and a DD was rare coil. I remember when the DD first started to gain popularity and it did so for good reasons...bad ground. Certainly quieted down some noisy machines in flunky soil, but at the expense of some depth and some target ID accuracy I thought as well as less performance in trashy iron.

I like both coils....I am not fond of seeing many manufacturers sticking with mainly just DD coils and dropping concentrics almost entirely. Not a fan of this whole paradigm shift thing. A nice balance of both coils is nice.

I realize some machine are really designed to run on DD coils so they perform best with them....so I get it but still Concentric coils have a good place.

I prefer them in certain iron trash sites...I am not a fan of the hot spot on the DD runing down from toe to heal even when the coil is further away from the targets.

I can't say using a concentric coil has opened up any new spots per say....I think the reverse was true when the DD came to their own in certain soils. But if you have decent ground and similar size coils I don't seem to remember getting way more depth out of one than the other if size was similar. There was a slight depth gain in concentrics back in the day but I don't remember seeing it as a huge difference.....again if coils were the same size. But back years ago there were not many options for large DD coils only big Concentrics so.....ya know.

I do know when I ran Tesoros almost exclusively back in the day the concentrics were a bit deeper and I used them unless the ground made me swap to a DD. I just like the search pattern of a concentric better. Sadly though...as I said...some machines do not get their best performance out of a concentric..Fishers and Teknetics are some...I think Nokta probably as well...

I have always done better with concentric ..except on the FBS machines.

Deeper cleaner sounds etc with the concentric and far less iron junk most certainly..
