Whites XLT-E Series Hip (Chest) Mount Procedure Needed

The Boring Part:

I have a Whites XLT-E Series Detector that I love to use but swinging it for any length of time aggravates the hell out of my shoulder. Hence I would like to convert it to being a hip mount unit to get that weight off the shaft. I find myself grabbing my Fisher CZ5 which can be readily hip mounted with just a belt, even though I would prefer to use the XLT-E. I have searched the archives but have been unable to find exactly what I need to aide me in this project. I had hoped that someone had undertaken this in the past and had posted the adventure here.

Because of the display and control pad there will obviously be more than one pitfall to overcome in a project like this, so any help, especially with pictures would be greatly appreciated.

The Actual Question:

Has anyone converted a Whites XLT-E Series to be hip (chest) mounted and could they post or email me the how-to directions?

Fits V3i, VX3, DFX, XLT, QXT. Mounts to existing control box screws to reduce weight of control box assembly. Less stress - more finds. Keeps control box off the ground. Note: mounting plate has graphics for XLT only, but will work with other listed units.

Weight: 1.1 lb

Thanks for the info I'll definitely take a look to see what they offer.

Thanks for the suggestion.

The Kellyco kit as pictured and/or described on their web site has no indication or mention of the display/control pad. Relocation of the control pad would seem to me to be the major obstacle in a modification of this sort. The picture they show is just a collection of parts without the detectors control pad. From the picture it appears that they are only relocating the control box to the hip, there are many wires that run from the box to the control pad. Any relocation of the pad, it would seem to me, would involve a lot of disconnection and reconnection of those wires. This would not scare me from doing the modification, but a prior look at the finished product would be nice to see. I guess when I get a little more time I'll give them a call and see what other info they have. Relocating the control pad on the box and still having it available for convent use is obviously a major concern. Since this is how the detector is turned on, setup for use and referred to during use I can't envision using it without the pad and associated screen. This kit looks like one that might be used with the older Whites machines, some of which had meters in the box and a few adjustment knobs and some did not. There are a lot of functions that can and should be modified during use that need the control pad to be functional. The newer XLT-E, the DFX and many others are somewhat more complicated than just a meter. This particular kit makes it look that it's as simple as a different rod, longer cable and a way to fasten it to your belt. Not to mention keeping the functionality of the pin-pointer switch active which would require retaining at least two wires from the box to the handle to make it convenient to use. Of course this switch could be relocated to the box but it would then be slightly less convenient.

As I said above I'll need to call them and talk to one of their reps to get some more info. Just looking at the parts lineup still leaves a lot of questions unanswered.

Maybe someone else will offer up a different approach to the mission.
