Whites vs. Garretts Detectors

General Question:

Is there a lot of difference between the Whites Prizm V and Garretts comparable priced model GTAx 550? I am just getting into treasure hunting and getting ready to purchase my first metal detector. I will be hunting in Southern West Virginia and at the North Carolina beaches mainly.

I know there will be pros and cons to both detectors but I was just wondering if one company has a better detector than the other same priced model.

Thanks

For wet salt beaches you will need a dd coil to handle the salt. Most detectors will work in dry sand pretty well. It's the wet sand that gives detectors trouble. It's seems to me the 550 is an older model. I would see which accesory coils you can get with either machine. You might consider an ace 250 , a used M6 or Mxt. Good luck.

The two best as far as all around machines for coins, relics & salt beaches are the Sovereigns, Fisher CZ's, which only one is currently being made which is the CZ3d, the Whites M6 is also a good one from what I here.

Pretty darn close on land and both poor in wet salt sand...I would visit your local mult-line dealer and try both on for size, or might inquire of the locals what works best in your area(observer at a local club meeting or joining a club would also give you good info).
Mike is right the Sov. or CZ are tough to beat in wet salt sand and both hipmountable..chestmoutable.. for easier beach or shallow water...hunting...

I agree. You posted on the Whites forum. Were you to post the same thing on the Garrett forum you probably would get a different answers. If you posted the same question on the general detecting forum you probably would get a more realistic answer.

I would take a very close look at the M6 with the 5.3 and the 6X10DD coils. The M6 is the MXT set up for coin hunting.
But the M6 is a very good on gold with that 5.3 coil as well a coins.
That 6X10 DD coil is very stable and deeep.
My best setup is the XLPRO with the M6 and that is to me a hard team to beat.Go to www.firstontop.com for tips and tricks.

I will use it at Holden Beach next summer. Would the Prizm V work ok?
I was wanting to stay around the $500 range to get started. When I find the big cache I will get the DFX.

Thanks
