Whites vs Garrett

Mr T

New member
I bought a Whites Prizm ll a week ago & I am not happy with it. I'm taking it back tomorrow. I hope they give me my $ back. I'm thinking of getting the Garrett Ace 250. Can any one give me some advise.

The Ace 250 has twice the features the P2 has. Buy a sniper coil for the 250. Just about every 3rd post here is on a 250. Just set back and soak it up! Tell me what you didn't like about the P2?

This forum and its archives are awash with advice and tips. The 250 is the most sold detector in the U.S.. That should be a clue. You'll be much happier with the 250.

The P2 I got didn't have a head phone jack. I went hunting with a buddy of who just bought a 250 and his seemed to be more sensitive an going off over ground that I just went over with my P2 & he was finding stuff.

Mr T, I have had my ace for 12 months and use it all the time mainly for relic hunting and thought i might up grade to a better machine, but i couldnt find one that would do any better at the type of detecting i do,the other day i took my 12 year old son to the park ,he found $7.00 in half an hour, toy car,1923 half penny,I did the digging so he shouted me a beer and he got an ice cream, what more can i say,you wont be sorry,,,Bazz,,:beers: :ausflag:

There a headphone jack on the side of the p2. It has a black plug in it. You won't regret getting the 250. The dvd says to hunt in the all metal mode. But I suggest starting out in the coin mode. Then progressing to the jewelry then to relic mode. Buy a good digging knife.

Mr. T: What Tigermoth says applies to me, also. I use my Ace for everything; coins, jewelry and relics. I upgraded to a Minelab X70 last summer, and it is a wonderful detector. BUT, the Ace does just as well, and doesn't require all the "fiddle-fooling around" with settings.

I like simplicity and results; the Ace provides it; the X70 is my back up detector & a good one to have if I need a manual GB feature for highly mineralized ground.

Well I just have to add my $0.02 to this post. I walked into a pawn shop in Myrtle Beach and ask to buy a metal detector, knowing absolutely nothing about them. The man showed me an ACE 250 and said it was the most popular detector going. I bought one and didn't even bother to read the instruction book, went to the beach and started finding coins.
Later I bought an GTP 1350 which I really like and use as my primary detector. I use the ACE 250 as a loaner or for my Grandchildren and wife to use. The bottom line is I can find just as much with the ACE as I do with the 1350. I could have bought 2 ACE 250's and had money to spare. Also after swinging the 1350 for an hour or two then changing to the ACE you realize just how light weight the Ace is; which is very important if you hunt for hours on end as I do.
In the end I have used no other brand than Garrett and more than likely never will, I am totally satisfied with every product and service provided my Mr. Garrett and his staff.
Your Friend,

On what detector to buy, went off half @#$%& bought the machine, didn't take time to learn it then posted negative stuff on here about it. Lets My first detector was the Whites XLT...researched and saved for 4 years, took the time to learn it and love it to this day...second detector Minelab Excal 1000, researche and asked questions for 18 months then got it for Chirstmas...waiting for snow to melt before I really get out and hit the beaches...but will never post a negative comment about it if for some reason we don't develop a love ship for one anothe!!

Ok Mr.T......for what it's worth. Every detector of every brand can be the "greatest" one made or the "worst" one made. Alot depends on the individual using it. A machine that works great in one part of the country might not be so good for another. Check around and find out the hottest seller in your area. Research the machine you're thinking of getting, check the posts here, look at the manual online if available. Once you get a machine...study, practice, study some more then practice again. Get to know your machine. Folks that complain they aren't finding anything might just be in an area that doesn't have that much to offer. Local historical societys, library, old maps.... all have a story to tell. Yada, Yada, Yada....you get the point. Good luck and happy hunting. P.S...I have both a Whites and a Garrett and like them both.

There is a rather large amount of detector information available to readers of this hobby.
The information on the forums is no different than the 1000's of reviews you can read everyday.

The Ace 250 is a great detector! And I own two as well. I have also learned and used at least 14 other brand and or types of detectors. Some really do work better than others in my area.

Some are of little to no use in wet Sand! Some work just fine! Most detectors can find metal objects in the top 4 inches of soil.

Some detectors features allows you to hunt more versatile than others. Coils sizes, Ability to discriminate in the top 2-4 inches of soil is a useful feature of a GTI 2500. I think you have to weigh the benefits of these bells and whistles verses your income or extra spending money available to you, when deciding the machine thats right for you.

Always remember that Bells and whistles usually mean your going to swinging additional weight, that can be hard on you in a full day of hunting.

Also think about where your finding most of your finds at. Usually that comes down to the top 4 inches of ground. Unless your hunting older sites or relic hunting. You may need to purchase two separate machines, Honestly I believe your better off with two if you enjoy relic hunting or enjoy finding things at older sites.

If your hobby funds are minimal it doesn't mean you can not enjoy this great hobby! There are many good machines that are reasonable in price, and will allow you to enjoy the hobby as a professional treasurer hunter!

The Ace 250 just happens to be a perfect blend of form, functions, and versatility! Awesome little machine.

Sorry for the long rant...hehehe. But so many people could be enjoying our hobby if they find this well balanced machine that Garrett should be calling "The Find of a Lifetime Machine!"

I look forward to everyones posts and pictures here in the future. If your thinking of a Machine please try to buy from one of our great sponsors here on the forum, they support our hobby well! Remember to post your support for this great hobby as well, and till meet in the field;
Happy Treasure Hunting...

I need to know why you are not happy with the White's. Speaking about depth the White's Prizm II is as deep as the Ace 250. Because of the round 8" coil of the Prizm pinpointing is easier for beginner.
Advantage of the White's is that it has a pot where you can adjust the ground balance and threshold. These pots can be accessed from the rear of the control box. So inground depth of the Prizm could be better after you set the GB for your ground.

The Ace has a preset GB that can't be changed. You can buy a smaller coil for the Ace (not for the Prizm). The Ace has many more features for the money that it should be compared to the 399 $ Prizm IV.

The Ace uses 4AA batteries and you can buy a charger with NIMH rechargeables for 10 $ at any store. The Prizm runs on two 9 volt batteries and a charger for these is more expensive.

The Ace is the better value right now. The Prizm is not bad either....
