Whites V3 & Super12 Search Coil

Ok how many have you chaps got one of the above As much info as possible, before I take the plunge guys ??

I've got one but in my ground, I haven't had much use for it. You guys have such different hunting conditions then us. I really don't know how valid our coil suggestions would be. Rob

I have the 12& 5.3 both coils are really stable an good pin point is right on. I've dug mine balls 12in. deep here in Tn. The 5.3 about 10in on a dime.. I like the 12 better than the 10 dd ..It lets me run more gain than the dd... I would get both... Ozark

Update ..... Been told else where, that the 12" will only give an extra 1" over the DD ?????

Well I don't think that's true the dd will go 10in to a point, the 12in should go to a 12 point .the dd cant get the most out of gain and tx boost in a lot of places but i can get max almost out of v3 would mean better depth than the dd... Ozark Just my thinking..

rob where is lockport Ozark

Lockport is in Illinois. Our ground has minerals and the 12" doesn't seem to get the depths you do. If I'm not mistaken, Activ8 is not from the USA. Your soil makes a difference. In a recent post Larry said the 10x12 SEF might get 1" more than the 10" D2. Larry is also in Illinois. Some guys just don't like the D2 but II think that is because of some bad coils that were produced earlier. For me the D2 does the job and in trash is 6x10 is my choice. Rob

Plenty of difference up here in Newfoundland, when using the Super12.The stock D2 that came with the V3 is ok,but when I finally broke down and bought the Super,it was like night and day...what a difference.
I was going over the same ground and hitting a pile of silver that the V3 missed before. The pinpointing was very fast and accurate and the machine even stabilized at higher settings. It worked like a dream!

"Only a inch" that's huge a inch could be the difference in coming home with silver or coming home empty handed. An extra inch can turn a bunch of fringe targets into good signals.

The DD and SEF coils tend to work better in the highly mineralized ground like we have here in Illinois. The larger concentric coils are just seeing too much ground at one time and it is like driving in the fog with your bright lights on for us. The DD and SEF coils are seeing much less of the mineralized ground at one time and will hear the deeper coins better. Where the mineralization is not a big factor, the conical is the better choice.

In my mild ground, and with my preferred slow sweep speed, the concentric coils are a better choice. I recently got the Super 12 and a 9.5", but have not had a chance to give either a test run. Possibly today??? If I do, I will report back.

I did have a chance to try the 5.3" and found that to be as good as the D2 in my area, with nearly as good depth and more accurate pinpointing.

In the past I have gotten a few extra inches with the Super 12 on my DFX. This will be the case in the following situations only:

  • Low to Moderate Mineralization
  • Low Trash
  • Low EMI

If ALL of these apply to you, then you should squeeze out at least a few more inches of depth with the Super 12.

There is one trade off: You will need to overlap your swings more with concentric coils because of the conical signal pattern vs. the blade shaped signal pattern of the D2.

I hope this is helpful!
Neil
