White's TDI Coin Settings and Target Responses

Hi Steve, Glad you are taking the time to do these test, and thanks for sharing them with us. I'm a bit confused on some of the iron rejection you are talking about. I hunt old homesteads where iron is the norm. As my limited understanding of how a metal detector works, I always thought that the iron will always produce an effect on the signal sent into the ground, and that disruption causes the signal to loose its strength to continue on to targets below. So if a nail is above a coin, say with about 2 inches between, the nail will disrupt the signal and the coin will be masked. As I understood it, this is a physical principle of science that can't be changed. So how is it that it does not see the iron and can pick up a coin near or beneath it? Am I not getting the concept of how this works? I understand the pulse signal as opposed to how my DFX signal works, but not getting how it can cut through the ferrous to see the non ferrous? Help!

Hi,

Never said anywhere the TDI will pick a coin up under a nail, although it does well at picking up coins near iron. Sorry if I gave that impression.

I most cases a nail will mask the coin.

What is unique here more than anything else is having a PI unit that will ignore iron or steel at all. That has always been the weak spot with PI detectors.

Got you. Thanks. So the signal itself will be disturbed by the iron, it just won't respond to the speaker. Also it will pick up nearer to iron than before. So I take it that it recovers fast because of the pulse signal? My DFX is set to recover quickly and I have pulled many a coin from iron along with a small DD coil. I hope there are some advantages over the DFX to warrant buying this unit. Have you noticed the TDI doing things that the DFX couldn't do? Would love to keep up on the newest units, but have to be realistic about cost. Thanks for any input on this.

steve, running these settings with the lower pulse delay should also pick up on any near by but so elusive gold coinage and jewelry? if i remember right the lower pulse delay settings pick up on gold and fine gold much better? will there be any difference in the detectors response? by the way awsome write ups!

Hi,

Nope, set this way you ignore all aluminum and therefore all gold and nickels. I large enough gold ring may sound off, however.

Hi coinnut,

Best just wait and see what people report. The TDI really was designed as a gold nugget detector, and it is more of a accident it does well on coins. It is not a "coin detector" per se.

Thanks Steve. Will wait and see. Would love to meet someone in the western Mass area, that has one. Would like to see it in action. Who knows, maybe there is that unintentional side effect, that will allow it to become a pretty good coin hunter yet! Thanks for all the info and testing, it is appreciated.

Good one Steve. Looking forward to hearing about it on gold. A lot of people hanging out bad for them to be released down here:ausflag:, me included.

Where are the other testers? You're good no doubt!!!! But who else tested this unit !! I use a White's and I look forward to a full/&/complete exam by you and others on this promising metal detector. Just my opinion but others need to speak out !!! What ya say bout it!!!
