Let me tell you about a friend of mine who has a PI machine which he has tried in good, unmineralized Louisiana soil at a civil war seige site. He has been hunting a small area of several acres for about 10 years, along with a host of other people, who have found every sliver of artifact within reach of VLF detectors. His PI machine has recently found a number of very deep, larger artifacts where the VLF machines would not reach: 2 bayonets, an almost complete rifle, along with myriad smaller objects-bottles, minnies, buttons, and a layer of bricks which apparently formed the bottom of a hut. So, in a hunted-out area where known artifacts have been recovered, it is possible to use a PI with very effective results. He ignores the loud signals which indicate iron and only digs the faint targets, knowing they are the deepest ones. By the time he's done, he has a large excavation which houses the nonmetallic bottles and even charcoal and bones from meals long ago. Using a PI differently from the VLFs may be an option for you, too.
