Hello I am looking for a little info on the DF PI. I would like to change the coil it is too big is this possible has anyone dint this and if so what coil do i need ?

I think the earlier version of the machine had a 10" coil if I am not mistaken. I have seen some on the beach.

I don't think it is possible to change the coil to a smaller size. I have a DF as well and at first I thought the coil was huge too but got use to it after a couple of hunts.
What is it about the large coil that you don't like?

The earlier Surfmaster PI Pro and Surfmaster PI have a 9 1/2" coil. The new DF actually has two coils in one. The 9 1/2" coil is easier to pinpoint with, but with practice you will get the hang of it. I too wish they had interchangeable coils (especially neutral buoyant) as I would prefer a smaller one for the same reason. You could call Whites to see if it's possible.

The DF is designed to work with the coil that comes with it as a small coil inside a larger coil ("Dual"---coils---"Field")

Changing to some other configuration, if possible, would eliminate the "Dual Field" ability that is the reason for this machine in the first place as it gives it a decided edge in capability!

Play around with turning the coil on edge etc and you may find pin-pointing a bit easier, but it's a trade off. Greater depth=more difficult to pin-point!

All I can add is that it seems to get easier to pinpoint the more you use the machine. A bigger scoop may help too. I upgraded to a 6" by 11" scoop and usually can pinpoint pretty easily in the wet sand. I still need more practice in the water though. HH!

Call White's and talk to a service tech.
He can explain to you exactly what can be done.

The target is in the center of the inner coil. Sweep from all four directions and center your target--then dig!! You dont need a smaller coil. Practice with a ring on the dry land or sand first . You can see where your target centers this way.
