Whites Spectrum Eagle Battery Mod

I have an original 1991 Whites Spectrum Eagle and of course the battery pack died shortly after I got it and I lost the charging wall wart too. This unit used 4 C' cells.

So I went to my local Radio Shack and purchased a spool of 16 gauge red/white twin wire and a 4 cell C cell holder and a 4 cell D cell holder.

I took the Whites provided C Cell pak holder and soldered the wires observing polarity to the metal contacts inside the pak. Then routed the wires out a small hole drilled into the plastic pak. Then I notched a 1/4" rectangle in the end of the whites battery door along the edge so the wires to the battery pack fed out the door and the door could be latched without pinching the wires.

Bolting the C 4 cell holder and D 4 cell holder together then I wired both 4 cell holders in paralell with each other red to red and black to black. Then attached the final line from the metal detector to the same points soldering it in place observing the polarity.

Now I can use either C or D cells or both in the battery pak. I wear a tan fishing jacket with numerous pockets when I hunt so with the 6 foot battery cable which runs from the detector to the battery pak I place the pak in my vest pocket. The 6' cable is long enough to give me plenty of room to swing the detector and stay out of the way. I get less fatigue swinging the detector since it nows weighs a lot less without batteries in it.

I now use Nimh cells (D type) rated at 2500ma with the detector and get extended hunt time due to the rating of the cells. I put C type cells Nimh type in while I am charging the D cells and it really works super!

Looking forward to warm sunny hunting weather :)

Hello,

I made a similar mod. I did not have the problem of replacing the original, died, battery pack but a more subtle one.
Using the Spectrum at night , during summer, I verified that the original Whites battery pack contacts often fail to provide a good connection, expecially when high umidity is in place.
The effect is that even if you have a fully charged battery pack, the Spectum signals Low Battery on the display and sometimes shuts itself off.
To solve the problem I used the following approach:

I replaced the original battery pack with an RC model 6V, 3000 mAh , ni-mh SC size battery pack that fits perfectly inside the Whites battery compartment and that I got online from http://www.robot-italy.com/product_info.php/cPath/4_5/products_id/431 .
I also replaced the original battery contacts with a robust Tamya quick snap connector to provide a secure connection to the main board.
This mod requires dissasembly of the Spectrum, removal of the old contacts and soldering of the new connector.
You also need a suitable battery charger for this pack.

Here are the pictures for the mod.

Cheers

Luca
