WHITES OR GARRETTS (HELP)

BIG-BOB

New member
HI EVERYONE I HAVE OWNED 2 WHITES XLT's AND AN MXT IN THE PAST 12 YEARS AND AFTER SELLING THE XLT 2 YEARS AGO DO TO A BAD BACK INJURY AND 2 SURGERIES I AM NOW GOING TO BE ABLE TO START DETECTING AGAIN MY QUESTION IS THIS....I AM LOOKING AT THE NEW GARRETTS AT-PRO AND THE WHITES MXT I JUST DO NOT KNOW WHICH TO BUY. I WILL BE USING THE DETECTOR FOR SOME OCEAN BEACH HUNTING - RESERVOIR BEACHES - OLD HOMES - CHURCHES - PARKS PLUS WE ARE IN A RICH AREA OF OLD RELICS HERE IN NJ ... I NEVER HAD THE MXT LONG ENOUGH TO REALLY GET USE TO IT AND WITH ALL THE REVIEWS OUT THERE I WAS HOPING YOU COULD HELP...

THANK YOU

Get the AT pro.

The one complaint i read of the AT Pro is even thou its not all that heavy if your arm is longer it tends to unbalance it
making it feel heavier than it is .
With your back as the fulcrum .
You might look at the Omega 8000 and the Tek G2 while neither is waterproof thy are very light
and easy to use.

I had the AT PRO took it back because water proof coil could only use that coil
Got the Whites MXT

Lots of factors to consider, but since you have the experience with a White's machine, your learning curve would be short. The AT Pro is brand new and has flaws as just about any new machine would. I would, and I am, waiting until the revised AT Pro is released before I would consider getting one. Coil selection is very limited on the AT while the MXT has 27 coils to choose from. Headphones are limited to the stock waterproof on the AT without an adaptor. On the other hand if you are hunting in the water, the AT is waterproof and that is the only reason I would use an AT for lake hunting.

I'm sure there are many other factors, but those would be my main concerns, maybe some of them hit home with you.

Tuff call. Two great, high quality companies you're choosing from. The ATP is waterproof to 10 feet. It doesn't come with waterproof headphones. The MXT is waterproof up to the bottom of the screen, then you're done - permanently. Headphones will add $50 to $125. Sounds like a good case for the Garrett. Maybe...

If you are planning light duty, once in a while detecting, the ATP looks to be one heck of a machine. If you plan on being out in the field more than 30 - 45 minutes, or if you plan a lot of coin, relic, jewelry hunting, then go with the MXT for the better balance and coil options.

However you wind up, good luck and HH.

I know the AT Pro is light, gets great depth, is hot on gold, has notching ability to compliment an already nice discrimination set up, water proof to 10 feet - no problem with accidental fall in water or sudden rain, is priced so reasonable that with the money you save you can "PIMP THE AT PRO" with coil cover, extra coil, water headphones etc. The only Whites I have is the Surfmaster II, so I can't really do any good comparisons.

Im still like Larry. The MXT is a proven machine for about all kinds of hunting and has an excellent GB even for raw gold hunting. Its a little more testy hunting the wet salt water sand. BUT... its got a lot of depth and sensitivity. Its been on the market long enough to have all the goodies you want to buy. Im not hearing a lot of park or relic hunting reviews on the Garrett. Sooo do you need a water machine or one that is simple to us and can be used about anywhere? The Garrett is in a great price range especially for what it does.... but im waiting for the big bang second generation. I do beach hunt but im not a big wader so to get me to buy.... id say show me more of an all purpose machine. Because thats what i can afford.

Since your not going to prospect I would be looking at the Whites M6 vs ATpro. I can say they are like comparing apples and oranges. One is a notch discriminating machine the other is not. One weighs over 4 pounds the other 3. One uses 4 AA batteries the other 8. One comes standard with a DD coil the other a round concentric. One can be used in the water or dropped in the water. The other not. I guess it would be up to you in the end? I have had the MXT, M6 and ATpro. If your not going to prospect for nuggets I suggest the M6 over the MXT. The coil and phone connector on the ATpro is waterproof to 10 ft. So they are special. Garrett is going to make an adapter the end of February. Between the MXT, M6 and ATpro I prefer the ATpro. 1st for being waterproof. 2nd. The ease of use 3rd. I love the notch discrimination. 4th - It's lightweight. But that's just me. Maybe you can find a multi dealer and try them both side by side?

I've been away for four days beach hunting and got the chance to try another AT Pro (the first I tried just did not live up to the hype). This one was a little better, one inch in air tests, but this made little difference "in ground". All my land detectors perform better than the Garrett but then they should as they are in a higher price range. In the surf I only use P.I.'s though I have multifrequency (Minelab) and a twin frequency Beach Hunter I.D. (Whites).

There's a heap of difference between being able to get a single frequency detector to work in and on salt ground and being able to get it to work well. The waterproofing is a big plus if your going to need it but its balanced back by the fact that Garrett design is still based on that of the 150, 250 and 350. When people are cutting the rear shafts to extend the length, buying third party shaft camlocks and running the headphone connector through the tube to emerge under the armrest thats a hint that things need looking at. Acceptable niggles in a new/cheap detector are not in a later version machine at a much higher cost. In the U.K. you can buy a whole range of proven detectors far cheaper from P.I.'s to a D.F.X. I worry that the headphone connector position is going to accelerate wear in the headphone wire and the wire entry point into the coil looks like a weak point.

I suggested that someone on another forum from the north of the U.S. (so to cold to enter the water for a good few months yet) should hang on as Larry suggests. This gives time for problems/weaknesses to be looked at and possible modifications made. There's also the chance of getting a near new one cheap from one of those who just has to try every new detector and sells them on not long after. I was threatened with being banned for being anti Garrett. Its O.K. though to say ALL C-Scope detectors are rubbish !

I like the MXT and the M6 but swapped to a T2 (very light). This performs really well but the build quality is not that of Whites and its the third replacement. First (from when only being sold in sports shops) was weak in construction in several places. The next had the improved F75 lower shaft but didn't detect quite as deep as the first and would cut out at times and the third had all problems solved except that the handgrip/shaft creaks if a large coil is used and thats a worry. Free replacements but then no one was trying to make out that the early models were perfect. So if you want a detector now I would look at the MXT or underated M6 and perhaps the T2/F75. If there's no urgency hang on a bit. They may well be something similar that would suit you better just round the corner.
