Whites MXT-v-minelab E-trac

I posted the question on the E-TRAC forum asking for a comparison of the two machines. My interest in purchasing another machine and possibly branching out. The post was closed. It seems E-TRAC people or person is a little insecure about there machines and dont want to compare the two. For fun, read the posted reply. I tried to respond but the post was closed. I posted the same question a week ago but it was removed. From the response, Maybe this is the red flag that says stay away from the E-TRAC, i dont know, because it's not in the best interest of the forum, grow up!!

Hi - I've used the multi frequency minelabs in the Explorer range since they first came out - and have been using the MXT for a little over a year now - MXT will work where the Minelab wont due to iron - but having said that the E-trac with the right programme is getting very close - as regards depth a large SEF (10 x 12) coil on the MXT will match the Minelabs signal for signal with no problem - ps I'm in the UK.

What kind of hunting are you going to use the machine for? Ive used the MXT and now use the SE. The MXT is simple to use, uses likely the best GB whites has, works great on gold items even Raw gold, it likes hot rocks. I used it for Relic hunting and coin hunting. On the beach ..... well you have to GB on the wet and dry where the MLs have not problem transitioning. The MXT is a hot relic hunter... but id still rather use the ML in a park or on the beach. The ML handles EMI a little better. Price wise... well MXT is in a good price range. If you are looking for silver .... hands down ML. They are really tuned to coppers and silver coins. You have a pretty good choice of coils for the MXT or pro, but the Pro coil is a killer. There is a LOT more available information on the Etrac about the target and depth. I like the Whites pinpointing switch. I like the smartscreen... ive never really liked the jumpy digital screens on deep coins. Hope this helps.

I cleaned the thread up so the disscussion can continue.

I have an Etrac and an MXT Pro.Both are great detectors for coin hunting. The MXT Pro because of how it's TID system works alerts me to gold jewelry better. The Etrac seems to be better suited and has an edge on finding deeper silver coins and copper coins.I'm still learning both detectors.I like to go in and hunt a spot with the MXT Pro then rehunt it with the Etrac.I believe there is a myth about finding coins the other detector "didn't see".Over the years I have rehunted places lots of times and found good targets I "missed".This was with the same detector I had hunted the spot 7 or 8 times with already.Remove some trash, disturb the ground,a change in moisture content in the ground, mow the grass shorter, concentrate harder, hit the target from a slightly different swing angle, better ground balance or sensitivty settting for the site that day and additional targets appear.
The MXT Pro isn't better at finding gold,I have been tuned into how gold responds on it better than I have with the Etrac. The Etrac's signal on deeper coins in trash is more clearly recognized by me,the way I have the machine set up,once again learning or conditioning of me.
I really like both machines for coinhunting.Tot Lots.Playgrounds, newer sites the MXT Pro is great, skim off the clad and jewelry as there isn't any deeper old stuff.Old,old sites.Go through it with the MXT Pro first then slow way down and comb it with the Etrac. It's just the way I like to hunt.Bill

Very important point Bill...glad you mentioned that. I was doing some testing with some rusty nails and a silver dime underneath of them separated by a 2 inch block of wood. With just the nails being discriminated out, certain sweep angles resulted in NO sound, while other angles had certain detectors chatter or beep, where if out in the field, you would at least investigate more.

So griding an area is very important when you start finding nails or targets. Griding one way, than 90 degrees the other, than at 45 degree angles.

I agree that it's more due to variables than opposed to one detector able to see a target while a different one could not. Obviously the detectors have to be somewhat on par with each other in some respect.

Saying that, with all the different detectors I have...got an E-Trac on the way ! At least I sold a few to finance it !

I have not used the MXT I use the E-Trac and before that the Garrett Ace250 so I cannot make a direct comparison. What I have found with the E-Trac is the marvelous capability to find the "good" target in the same hole as a "trash" target. I have found and I have seen my friend who uses an E-Trac as well find good targets with a piece of junk setting right on top of it. I saw a quarter dug that actually had a pull tab wrapped right around it!

As for the thread in the E-Trac forum it was closed I BELIEVE because the discussion was getting to a "too personal" level. Now that is my opinion and only the administrators can answer for sure why it was closed.

It was deleted because of comparisons on brand/model specific forums weighs heavily towards brand loyalty instead of objectionably, sometimes getting quite nasty. I made the call on the E-Trac thread and moved the MXT post here. If everyone played nice, we would not have to do this.

I was disappointed that it was closed. I posted the question and didn't get to reads the replies before it went away. Not sure how things went either.

I own both and found in a side by side very little difference in performance, with the ETRAC a better md but is it $700 better? Coins at 8" are no problem for both but, I use my MXT more because it's lighter and the Target ID is excellent as well. When you think about it from a dollars and cents perspective, for $700 less, and what I found to be little difference in performance, the MXT is an excellent MD and one of the best buys out there. I know the ETRAC will probably out perform the MXT over-all, but agian, it is $700 more and I would expect it to.

Good hunting
Mike

I don't own either but I have owned and explorer. It depends on what's important to you. The MXT has more value compared to the price. The etrac might beat it in certain situations. The MXT might win in other situations. I don't like ML customer service and I do like whites customer service. I'm sure others will disagree but I speak from my own experience. If you don't like the MXT you will most likely be able to get back most of the investment and the warranty can be transfered to the new owner. On the other hand if your going to be hunting with the MXT and wondering about the etrac at the same time, you might as well bite the bullet and get one.
