Went out today detecting, nice day lots of people around. A woman approached me as i was working a picnic area asked if i found anything good "no,just some clad and a lot of junk" i replied. 'Ive got a metal detector, a whites, in my closet i paid a lot of money for it and i never use it" she said. What type of whites is it? 'um.. i don't know but i paid around $800 for it.Is it an mxt? i asked.Yeah that's the name i think..mxt... My question, why in the world would you pay $800 bucks for an mxt to take up closet space??? one final note... i asked her if she would sell it she said 'sure, for $800 dollars" some people!

One of my Whites is an MXT. I bought it used with several extra coils. I don't leave it in the closet, BUT I don't use it as much as I could. The reason being although it is a very versatile and capable detector with some good features, to me it's just not as much fun as my Tesoros. The weight is a big factor and it doesn't handle as nicely as the Ts and I like to go light and lean most of the time.

This reminded me of the many time I have read on the forums "I have way too many detectors and I am thining out the herd". Wish I had that problem.

Don't get me wrong,i absolutely love my Vaquero...The point I'm trying to make is when u pay good money($800 dollars) for ANY detector, and it just sits in a closet, it defeats the purpose of why you bought an expensive machine in the first place. If i could have bought it for say... $200... i would have sold it on ebay for profit and bought a Tajon :tesoro:

I think a lot of people have set their expectations too high, they watch the whites commercials etc and think they will find half a dozen gold rings on the first day. Lots of detectors collecting dust. I think the people who just enjoy the hobby to get out and get hooked on the hunt more than the finds, just my opinion.

Like many others maybe she bought top of line for first detector. Decided she didn't like the hobby and now the detector sits. She will probably never sell it due to she sees it as new and still worth what she paid for it. Happens a lot.

And once most people go out and start digging pounds of trash,it is easy to put in the closet and forget it.It takes a lot to stay with it.I like it much better than fishing or shooting beautiful animals in the woods. It is about you, your equipment, the challenge of recovering a coin or items lost many years before you were even thought about. It takes a certain type personality to stay with it for sure. You will find as you get older to be glad you got some knowledge and experience in the earlier days because going out metal detecting is the only thing that will keep you sane in such a crazy world. :-D

I don't know about everyone else, but the curiosity factor is one thing that keeps me going. Even when it's just a pull tab or other trash I want to see what made the detector beep. Of course, after about the fiftieth, I fade a bit, lol.
