whites liberty II question

Hello everyone, I own 3 metal detectors, my first being a Whites Coinmaster 5000/D series 2. I bought it at auction for $80 about a year ago to see if I would like detecting for fun, of course I got married so that was on hold for a while but I finally got out to try it and I love it. I'm wasn't quite sure on how to adjust the settings or maybe the battery pack isn't right since it takes two 9 volts. I grew impatient with what I thought was an outdated detector so I went out and bought a Minelab Exterra 30. I was not impressed with the depth or the readings. I was at a yard sale a couple of weeks ago and purchased a Whites Liberty II that I bought for $5.00 because they thought it was a kids model since the shaft setting was all the way up. The only reason I bought it was to turn a profit but I used for fun and this detector blew my mind away with the depth and accuracy of the tone. I'm keeping this detector and ebaying the other two until I can afford a better model. There is nothing to this detector so why is it so good and where do the batteries go? Thanks Cuda.

The liberty manual is on the Whites site for download. Here are the battery instructions. Rob Click on picture.

The Liberty II is a good machine. It will also run on a single 9 volt when need be. I still have one but it starts to go chirpy after being on for more than 5 minutes. We bought it new 20+ years ago.

I had the Liberty DI for many years which was the only Liberty to come to the U.K.
Blue plastic body with battery pack under the armrest and DI meter in a large pod on top of the handgrip.
Excellent detector with great all metal depth. It had a hardwired coil and the tiny 1/8th inch headphone jack. Both of these I soon changed.
I always thought that Minelab should have looked at the Whites design before they launched the Explorer. It was far better.

Is the Liberty II a similar model in the range without the DI meter ?

Mine is quite different in appearance to what is in the manual, mine has a straight aluminium shaft and the battery pack goes into the top of the control housing.

You are right it is a great unit, the only thing is that I think that it needs a new coil for it. I understand that the PRO and II and III series coils will work with an adapter.

I would really like to get it working again.
