Whites help

Detected about 20 years ago while in highschool but then got out of it. Boy have detectors changed! I last used my dads Whites Eagle (first one) which I liked. I'm looking to get back into the "swing" of things and need to pick out a detector. I've had Whites and Tesoro but I want to stick with Whites but am wondering what to get? I know this is very subjective but I want something reasonably priced (under$600) that I can coinshoot with , mostly on private property, occasional park or school. I was thinking Eagle II SL 90, XLT Spectrum, MXT. Can I get opinions on what a (I'll call myself a beginner since it's been so long) should get. I've read reviews on these but that doesn't help me as they all sound good. I don't want a huge learning curve. Help! I am still trying to learn this sight and it's search options. THANKS, Brian

M6 or MXT quick learning curve, both very capable and a good selection of coils available. JMHO

Welcome to the forum Brian. Im not really sure I run a V3 and love it. I have heard a lot of good things about the MXT. I believe that it is around the price range you are looking for.

Welcome to the forum Brian. The older detectors are very good in the hands of those who know them well, but if you are getting back into the hobby, it sounds like you might be prime for a used MXT. Easy to learn and use and it can keep up with the big boys............

under 600 you cant beat the xlt spectrum or e series and they are a lot lighter than the eagle, more ergonomic on the wrist for sure. bought my xlt new and never will get rid of it, and there are alot of coils available for it as well

Thanks for everybodys responses so far, I'll keep studying up on these. I should consider the weight and ergonomics as well as I am recovering from recent back surgery ( too young for this.) All I do know is it will be a White's.

Well...From what I have seen in the new White's catalog, the XLT is not going to be offered anymore...It is (was) a great machine, and still capable, but one must ask if White's is still going to service and support it...With this in mind...I would not get anything less than the M6

HH,

Hello Brian
I have a like new MXT only used 2 times
I can't send you a PM, you don't have enough post.

I've had back surgery too and now suffer from degenerative disc and metal detecting is the best therapy for my back as far as I'm concerned, really helps me. I swing a M6 and love it but if you could handle spending just a little more cash I would go for the new MXT pro, I would have but at the time the MXt didn't have tones. You wouldn't be disappointed with a M6 or a standard Mxt by any means, lots of coils to choose from too.

Thanks again for the replies, I did my reading and decided to buy a used MXT. Thought about the XLT and figured that was a great machine but too much for me to start with. I haven't read anything bad about an MXT so it should be on it's way to me. Can't wait!

Yep MXT will fit your needs as its basically an XLT in user friendly package and XLT has a learning curve which is not for you at this stage in entering hobby..

I run an XLT and love it. it is a turn on and go detector with the basic programs but also allows you to tweek the settings and make your own programs. I had an M6 last year and liked that one also except that it had no threshold setting ( I like having a threshold adjustment). to me the lower frequency on the XLT is great for silver but the M6 and MXT hit on gold better. I myself would go with an XLT because I like the extra adjustments. even if Whites drops the XLT model I am pretty sure they will keep repairing them for a long long time, many were sold and they still have a strong following.

The frequencies of the MXT, XLT and DFX are all different. I go back a long way using Whites. I like the DFX in my soil over the MXT, 14.7 kHz. The option to hunt n one frequency is a DFX setting. The XLT can do a couple of things better than my DFX near power lines with a special Sierra coil. The DFX with DD coils is great in bad ground and wet salt sand @ the beach. Best of all they are all well built. The Sunray in-line probe is tops. Good luck on your decision.

The good news is they are all great detectors and I don't think I can really go wrong. If I don't like it, I get my wife into detecting and then I can always get something different. The Mxt forum users sure love them though. It's coming Monday, I also ordered a pinpointer so I should get detecting Monday or Tuesday. I've got the bug as I used my dad's old Eagle yesterday and found a silver Rosie along with some other stuff. I've got the bug again!

Yeah once the bug bites your blood is never the same. You should like the MXT. The whole frequency thing has pros and cons depending upon the soil conditions. The Sunray probe really helps, I've used it to locate shallow targets before I start to dig. Good luck.
