I just bought this whites GM v/sat for 375.00 It comes with two disks, I would like to know if this is a good deal and which pick up is best for what use. I have never used one before. Its in the mail and on its way to me. Is there anything you all can help me with on the use of this detector.
At around 16 or so years old now, it's still a very workable great machine. Just does not have all the Bells and Whistles of the new stuff and so requires a bit more knowledge to operate than the set and go units. Depending on your experience, how much you've looked into the theory and operating principles of metal detectors, could determine how quick you take to this machine. Your area mineral and iron content can possibly present you some challenges as well. You will need to get yourself about a 1/2 Grain and a 1 Grain Gold test pieces to practice with. If you want, you can also use small lead bird shot around the same weight. There will a lot of learning what your machine is telling. You will need to develope an ear for paticular sounds and in relation to coil movement. It will come together with much practice and patients.
Get your hands on one or both books to learn some Theory. And don't let anyone tell you this machine will not find coins. I cleaned out a portion of a river beach here of coins that is often metal detected by others. It's an All Metal manual adjust Machine but the boys with the Set and Go Bells and Whistles obviously missed a bunch of the stuff I found.
The Complete Unabridged "ZIP" "ZIP" by Larry Sallee. Another is Advanced Nugget Shooting by James A. McCulloch. Jimmy Sierra also had a book out as well but can not think of the Title. Think about getting the 4" X 6" Master Shooter coil as well.
At the prices I've seen these units going for these days (near, at, or over what they sold for new), I think you may have done pretty darn good if everything works.
