I'm looking for a used detector and I'm thinking of those two models. Which one would you recommend and why ? I'm a begginner at this.

Thanks

you are comparing apples to oranges. the whites spectrum is a $800 detector with 29 different adjustments and has a long learning curve. the deleon is about a $480 detector, that has three knobs and one mode switch. i guess i would ask myself how much detecting do i plan on doing. also what type of detecting will i be doing the most of. once you answer these questions then you will be able to better decide on what detector will best suit you. in the tesoro line, the detector that i would recommend would be the vaquero, its not a TID detector. but it for the price is a great little detector. you could buy it brand new one probably cheaper than you can buy the used whites and have a life time warranty. dont let it fool you it may look like a toy but does not work like one. they also have a learning curve, because it doesnt do the thinking for you, you are the one still doing that it just gives you the information. but its all about what would work best for you, if you know somebody that has a detector see if you can use it first to get a better ideal of what you want. sometimes dealer have display units that you use alittle in their yard to get more of a feel. my advice would be take your time and do your homework and get the one thats made for you. read these forums there are allot of people on them that have many, many years experience and are willing to help. i am a little bias, i think bang for buck tesoro is the best, but that may not be the case for you. like i say the worlds best detector is between your ears, and the detector in your hand is just a tool. good luck, keep us posted.

How do you plan on using the detector? Are you hunting relics or do you intend to look for coins and jewelry? Or both? If you live in an area where the ground is light to moderate in mineralization the Deleon will work well and be much easier for you to pick up and use. The Spectrum on the other hand will require a definite learning process if you plan to get the most from it. In truth the comparison can't be a totally valid one if you consider the selling price of both detectors in used condition or their price when new. One other consideration you may want to consider is the warranty. If you can afford a new Deleon it will have a lifetime warranty.

Six months ago I bought my first metal detector in 24 years of not detecting.

There are so many choices and there is so much hype going around, it's tough.

I've got some advice for you.

(VERY IMPORTANT)........Don't buy an expensive metal detector at first.......

It is very seldom that a first selection works for an individual. There's just too many choices.

I found something I liked when I bought my third metal detector.

You may even give up the hobby altogether. Then your stuck with an expensive closet space occupier.

I think two good choices are Garrett Ace 250, Tesoro Silver uMax.

Those are keepers, and would be good backups for higher priced MD's.

It doesn't have to be expensive to work well.

Take it from an old Tabdog

They are both pretty good detectors, with the DeLeon being a little more basic (turn on and go) as compared to the Eagle Spectrum which has many settings that you control. Also, if you are talking about the older Eagle Spectrum, as compared to the more modern Spectrum, you might do better with the more modern circuitry of the DeLeon. Both would probably be excellent detectors though. As some of the other posts mentioned, you might want to also consider the warranty. The Whites has undoubtable expired, while the Tesoro is probably still good. I say probably because they offer the lifetime warranty to the original purchaser of the detector, but generally will do work on it for free for second and third hand buyers. The exception might be on major damage or modifications of the board and such. If you are going for a TID, and are a beginner, I would lean toward the DeLeon to start off your adventure!

Best of Luck!

Yeah if I was just starting out I wiould gor for one of those or even the Compadre. THe worst mistake novices can make is buying more detector than they can handle. Start simple and work your way up.

Just kidding but they come from some where, thank goodness.
