I just recently got a whites Eagle 2 metal detector and have been using it in the primary settings and tiring to get familiar w it.Recently I visited the beach and tried to use it in beach mode C.
First I turn on the detector2ND I push audio mode and go to C for beach 3rd air test button 4Th ground button. Now on the screen I have A next to the Audio mode button.Am i still in beach mode??Shouldn't there be a C there instead of the A.Also when I do locate a target and pull the tiger to pinpoint the letter B appears. Also I find it difficult to use on the beach.Seems like i get a lot of false signals. Does anyone have any input??

Hi Dave, I to have a Eagle 11 sl, And i was just going to post a ??. But i think you should have a C when in beach mode, but with all the falseing you need to set the balance on the front. That is one of the ? i was going to ask. When do you know you have the balance set right?

I used a Whites Eagle for many years, but don't have one in front of me now, to jog my memory (there were a few incarnations of Eagles too, as the years progressed). But as Flinstone said, if there's a signal balance knob in front, make sure it's clicked off, if you intend to use in wet salt. The eagle never was very good in even moderately mineralize wet salt. Even though it supposedly "tracked" (when moving closer to, or further away, from the water's edge), it didn't track very well at all :( Not like the 6000 di pro. anyhow, which effortlessly moved around the wet salt. On the eagle, you have to turn down your sens in the wet salt sand, down to about 45 or 50 it seems, with the signal balance off, and making sure you have no pre-amp gain on.

Even with that, I found that I had to continually rebalance when moving further too, or further away, from the water's edge.

On the land, it was a good machine, for its time. But on the wet-salt beach, it is lacking.

Hi Flintstone thanks for the reply.I have the eagle 2 that's the model before the eagle2 sl.You speak of the balance, sounds like the sl has a balance knob the eagle 2 doesn't have. The primary controls i use i had the understanding that when i ground balance the machine balances it automatically??????Also I use it at fresh water lake.Does the fresh water effect the metal detector like salt water??Does it mater??Also the sand I was trying to detect in was saturated big time..Lots of water..Any suggestions??

Unfortunately single freq. units do not work well in wet saltwater sand and the Eagle was no exception...nice unit for its time but the blue box was a wristbreaker and all Eagles were double tiered and like chinese puzzles to set up...Been so long since I used the eagle can't quite remember what the gizmo knob in the front did but didn't help in wet saltwater sand. Perhpaps a call to Whites could give you a more technical explanation and if I remember correctly was advised early on to turn it far left. Should work fine in freshwater wet sand and due to its age may may need a tuneup or the coil could be malfunctioning causing the problem...
Do remember this was the earliest of sort of a small computer..and might try rebooting it...simply turn on and remove battery while on and leave sit for a few minutes and then insert the batterry and turn on..Honestly would bet your not familiar with its workings and setup and somewhere you are goofing up so might visit a Whites dealer...several out of print publications that will help if you can find one...Eagle 11 Short course for greater depth and operation...Eagle Easy and flying the Eagle...Ask for them on the classifieds as most dealers or detectorists for that matter have old publications laying around and you might get lucky...

The knob in front was"Signal balance control" and is similiar to the preamp gain of an XLT as its used to get more depth, stability and performance. Info out of one of Townleys old books for the Eagle Spectrum which came after the 87-90 eagles and was the heavy forerunner to the lighter XLT...

Here is an owners manual if you didn't get one: http://media.whiteselectronics.com/manuals/Eagle%20Manuals/Eagle%202%20instruction%20manual.pdf
