White's Eagle 11 SL

MK111

New member
I have a older White's model Eagle 11 SL. What can anyone tell me on this model. Is it outdated? How will it detect along side of newer models? Should I sell it and upgrade? What is it worth in good working order? Thanks for the input.

Outdated? Well, sorta - like a Mercedes 500 SL. Or and old Caddie.
It will detect right along with most I've compared it to.
It is the foreunner of the Spectrum/XLT/DFX and by most accounts is as good as those and most others. Many people still swear by them.
I'm going to sell mine, only because I don't like the balance. Most of what I see says they go for $300-350, and I'll sell mine to anyone who splits the difference for me.

But you have a good machine and if you like it, you should take advantage of it.

That's circa early to mid 90s-ish. Great machine! Good target separation, fast response, good TID, etc... About the only problem I had with it, is it's not as deep seeking as the current generation of machines (I kept getting my b*tt kicked by Explorer guys in deep turf duels). Another problem (at least with mine) was that it doesn't ground track well, even on the fast auto-track settings. Kept needing re-ground balancing whenever moving closer to, or further away, from the wet/salt/surf's edge. But loved it in all other regards. Yes still competitive, but pitted against certain machines in certain hunt types, you'll get out-classed. Deep turf and wet salt would be the weak points, when compared to certain other machines, in my opinion.

If I could find an immaculate condition Eagle II SL 90.5, I might even trade a very nice Fisher F70 for it if it had a couple of coils.

Too bad you didn't say that sooner. I am selling one to my friend tomorrow. Ah, well that's the way it goes.

However, he may be willing to trade you for it. PM me and I'll tell you how to contact him.

Suggested retail of $849.95 Eagle II SL............. come out mid 1990 If I remember correctly

Hope that helps you..it is still a fine machine and you have layered menu buttons for all access.

Awesome detector, and still one of the best on the market in my opinion

One more thing..The first Eagle SL did not have the Ch ( Competition mode) on it. If and thats a big if I remember right..So don't crucify me if I am wrong.
And maybe not even the saver modes that you create. Those came out 19 years ago..thats a long time to remember correctly.

Oh and by the way it was only 192 possible notch accept and reject settings available not 195 as I stated. That was a typo on my part..sorry.

It also has auto track ground balance on it after you do air/ground set up. I forgot that too. And it has Abiltiy to have threshold, Silent search, or tone Id while you hunt.3 choices you make the choice when setting up for the hunt. I think they were listed ABor C setting.

You still remember pretty good Elton...... I used the Eagle II SL for about 10 years before moving up to the DFX when it came out. I had a hard time giving it up.

Frank, a fair looking SL just sold on Ebay for $350 which I think is a little on the high side. Use or trade is up to you and what kind of hunting your going to do. There are some pretty high tech detectors on the market and more to come, but is it worth the price to upgrade? The SL II is still a good coin and jewelry hunter. The Spectrum, a little better and the XLT a little better yet.

I enjoyed mine while I had it. It was better for most urban applications with the 6" coil, IMHO. The 9.5" disc, on the other hand, didn't do it for me.
In the end, the weight and goofy balance of the thing did it in. I don't care for any detector that requires an arm strap to swing right.

Your correct the XLT, and DFX has many improvements. Including the weight factor. Let me state this though..if you can get a Eagle II SL for the right price..jump on it.
They work well, and make wonderful backup detectors. I did read somewhere that Whites may be near out of parts for repairs though.Keep that in mind when buying.

Thanks Elton,

Looks like I got lucky, since it appears that I do have the SL 90.5. It's been in the basement for longer than I care to admit. I've used it about 10 times since new. I was a victim of downsizing and have some free time for a while. I'm determined to get out in the field and learn this thing backwards and forward. I bought the Daryl Townley book. Hope that will help. Did you use the stock coil on yours?

R

Yes Sir, I used the stock coil 950 . I also used the 8" coil. Seems like I might have used a 350 sniper coil, don't think the 5.3 coils were out yet. Like I said it has been years, and my thoughts are all from memory. The 8 inch didn't loose much depth and the pinpointing was better. The 350 was a little erratic but ok for Junk areas. No great depth on the 350 though.

PS: I didn't know Townley had an Eagle II book.. I have his xlt book and it's good. Thats the guy from Canada isn't it?.

Here is some finds from this morning using the Eagle II SL 90.5 with a brand new Precision Scan 800 coil. I just recently traded for this detector. It's the 3rd. Eagle II SL 90.5 I've had over the yrs. Oh yeah, this Eagle will hang with any other White's out there. It just weighs a little more. Daryl Townley is from Oklahoma.
They're nothing to brag about but were fun to dig.

Mike
