Whites DFX or Garrett GTI2500 Hummmmm???

Ok I had a Garrett CX from around 1993,never used it but was stolen out of my garage,,,,dammmm and I wanted to use it now since i just retired...
Anyway I thought I would get a Garrett 2500,I will be useing it at the Beach, parks from the Poconos to Montauk point.....And maybe ONCE a year MAYBE take it on vacation and look for GOLD nuggets in northern Calif....
I called KellyCo and they told me that I am better offf at getting the DFX from whites because it has a GOLD PROGRAM built into it.
Hummmm ok Now i am leaning towards the whites DFX.
And now everyones saying I should be getting the whites MXT because it picksup GOLD Nuggets better....
Hummm thought the DFX would pick up just as good because its programed into the detector?
I am not looking to save money I just ratter pay a few extra hundred dollars and get the best.
But also hear many people complain how hard it is to tune the DFX...
Now I am back looking at the Garrett GTI 2500 because it has a all Metal Mode to pickup Gold....
I don't even Know if i would take the detector with me to Calif because it might get broken on the plane lol.
I had to lug it around but then again it might be fun....JohnnyT

The MXT is made for gold hunting while the DFX can be used for it, but hear the MXT is much better as it has a Prospecting mode right on it. I would forget the GTI 2500 as I had one and even all metal couldn't see what I could see with my Minelab Sovereign in disc.
I am sure Steve will tell you more as he does use his quite a bit for gold hunting.

Go with the MXT and get one of the Double D coils. The other 2 will not handle the mineralized ground in gold bearing areas as well if at all and do not have the small gold sensitivity of the MXT. The MXXT is tops for fresh water beaches also.

Thought the DFX had a mode for Gold???
Well since i will use the Detector maybe once a year for looking for Gold i thought maybe the DFX would be better since I will be useing it mostly on the east coast....JT

The GTI excels at the sizing feature, especially if you want to find small targets and not large deep targets, or the reverse. I've used the GTI-2000 but not the 2500, so I wonder if Garrett has added a auto tune for the all-metal mode, or set it up where the ground track works on the Disc. side. However I was not able to get as much usable sensitivity out of the GTI because of the effects of electrical interference, which I think is more troublesome because of the search coil design. Still its a good backup.
I've not prospected with a DFX or MXT, but the MXT seems very hot on things like diamond studded earrings. And jewelry does not get much smaller. The DFX is not hard to tune-all you do is walk through the options, and when finished hit save so it is stored. What the DFX does have that the MXT does not is a non-motion hunting modes [that is one the the most powerful around] and you have SAT and multiple speeds of retune if it is needed. And you also have the adjustable ground-tracking speed.

From my info at a Whites seminar when the MXT came out I was told the MXT is made more for gold hunting while the DFX would work, but not as good. The MXT came out after the DFX and had improved software plus easier to use also. The DFX is a powerfull detector only if set right, if not the MXT will do better. To set the DFX you will have to understand what these controls do, so prepare for a longer learning curve.

Its been 3 years since I have been out west nugget hunting and 2 years since I used the MXT. Lots of new coils are out since then. If I do get a M6 to try out it will be interesting to see how some of them perform.

Tom

What about with a small coil on the DFX will that help much?
I ratter spend a few dollars more and get the best machine.
I will not be useing it much for Gold detecting,I am going to Calif in July for a few days and maybe a year or two the next time. And thought the DFX and a very small Coil would help.......
But most of my detecting in on the east coast on the beaches, parks and old schools and houses.JT

Based on your needs I would suggest the DFX then. It will handle the wet sand better and the ID and tones will be of help in the trashy parks. Get one or both of the DD coils and you should be all set for that nugget trip.
