Whites D2 coil VDI's

I just bought a D2 coil and I have mixed emotions about it so far. It could turn out to be just fine but I am digging quite a few pull-tabs and bottle caps that show as a solid penny signal around 77-79 VDI. Anyone else that has a D2 coil, could you please let me know if this is normal. I have previously burned up my own lawn with my MXT PRO and when I got the D2 coil I hit it again. I found 3 more pennies and a nickle that I had missed with my 950 coil. Its hard to believe that the 950 was not capable of finding the same coins BUT I credit the fact that the D2 has more ground coverage making 'finding' the signals easier. Regardless, it found more coins in my hunted out yard so it will find the targets fine, its just that it is showing higher VDI's than any of my other coils and am a bit concerned if it has an issue or if thats just typical for its design.

I just got my D2 coil so i could cover more ground...but haven't gotten a chance to test it out yet since i already cleaned my yard out with my 6" excelerator. Would like to hear more on this though.

P.S, does your D2 say spectra series on yours? I'm just wondering if that was normal. Mine says spectra series D2 and i have an MXT Pro, not a spectra...just kinda worried about that.

First of all, RECHECK YOUR LAWN! Anytime you get a new coil you can find stuff another coil may have missed. The D2 might have better depth than the 6" Excellerator but I don't know anything about that coil.
Mine also says Spectra Series. I believe that means it is V-Rated and will work with the Spectra V3i,V3,VX3, DFX, MXT, M6.

I would guess that the D2 coils that look like this....

are not V-Rated and work only on DFX, MXT, M6??

I think the non V-rated coils are harder to find but the stock images showing the original coils are very common. So search results for the D2 show images for the original D2 (non v-rated) coil.
Example of the original D2 coil.......

Example of the V-Rated D2 Coil that specifies Spectra Series.....

Even Whites website shows the old coil but describes a V-Rated coil. If you bought from whites, they would most likely send a V-Rated coil even though the image is not such. This is pure assumption though, if they made multiple D2 coils and now specify that they are V-rated, I can only imagine that the originals were not V-Rated.

The good news, regardless of speculation, no matter which D2 coil you have it is built specifically for the MXT plus a few other models.

Cool, thanks for the reply. The only reason i said i am not going to recheck my lawn is because it is a new property and all their really was was zinc pennies and a whole bunch of trash. If i had an older property then yea i would. I actually sent the stock 12" coil that came with the MXT Pro to whites and they replaced it with a brand new 10". The reason i replaced it was because that 12" was a monster! Way too big...

How deep does the 10" D2 coil reach with small coins like pennies? Just curious.

and dimes....or any coins for that matter.

Since I got mine, It has been super dry so I havn't had a fair chance to use it yet on deep stuff. I had to abandon a few targets that were too hard to dig in a public park where small hand tools are the only option, I dug about 5 inches and gave up. But I did an air-test when I first equipt it, It was very marginally better than the 950 stock coil. At first I was sllightly let down but remember, it is every bit as deep and then some BUT it is covering much more ground per pass at the same time. So considering that, it is pretty impressive. Also, air-test does not mean fair-test.

If your curious about the air-test, Sensitivity was at +1 due to testing INDOORS and electricals were causing noise. Penny and dime were the same at 8.5 inches. Quarters were about 10 inches. Also, this is the depth that the MXT PRO was showing VDI's, NOT just a whisper. I really think it can detect a bit deeper in ideal real life situations, IE, Sensitivity set higher, wet soil, coin on side, clean soil.

All of the White's D2 coils are V rated even though they have used several different decals on them. The D2 was developed for use on the V series detectors but has proven to be a very good coil for other detectors as well. The D2 does not always go deeper than a concentric coil depending on your ground, the DD/SEF style coils will excel in very mineralized ground and projects a "windshield wiper" pattern in the ground instead of a cone pattern. The D2 is very good at separating targets and rejecting ground noise but the concentric coils can go deeper in mild ground conditions. Coil selection always has trade-offs gaining something and giving up something else.

Yeah, the 2 stock coils the 950 and D2 are similar size and depth but each will leave a few targets behind that the other has a shot at finding. To clean out a given area out, it would take AT LEAST 4 different coils and then I'm sure theres something hiding under a few nails and hotrocks that are just plain stubborn. But even then, Trading off the whites machines for an 'off brand' machine wold find even a few more targets perhaps. .......Off Brand.

I just got a chance to run my new D2 at my grandmas and i found a bunch of change with it. It didn't let me down. It hit on a dime at about 5".

I took mine out in my cleaned out yard, its a very small yard and easy to clean out, I found a 1915-D Wheat cent that I missed with my 950 coil. It was not too deep, about 4 inches, but there was quite a bit of trash around it and the D2 has a very highly concentrated signal, as in all focused in a narrow line length-wise, so it barely picked it out next to the trash. Not that I remember how the 950 acted in this very spot but I speculate that with the trash so close by that it masked the penny and the 950 was unable to seperate the targets.
Chaulk another win for the D2 vs 950.

The D2 will quite often ring up bottle caps into the quarter range on the VDI (mid 80's). That's the main reason I opt for Whites concentric coils over the DD's usually.

Nice find Aarong. I found 2 Wheaties myself this weekend, not as old as yours though. 1951 and 1944. My great grandmother built the property in the 50's, so that would be why. I really like the D2 coil. The only thing that bugged me while i hunted this week was all of the old soda cans and beer cans at the park, they kept giving me 25 cent and $1 signals and i dug up alot of garbage....i really tired me out. The bottle caps were giving me zinc signals and i dug them up because i always think they are zincolyn's. Anyway i will post what i found this weekend.

Sorry if they are too small to see, i had to resize them because of findmall's sad image limit of 400kb

Its true the D2 shows bottle caps as a good penny, dime or quarter signal at times. That kinda sucks if there are alot of bottle caps but the good news is that it has you dig a few targets that you might have skipped otherwise. I would rather my coil make me dig iffy signals rather than downgrade a good target making it appear to be trash and skipping it.

The D2 is an awesome coil. Good separation too. I dug a CW bullet at 8" - listen for the whispers, then crank up the gain and see what you get.
