Whites Classic III Mods

lrsafari

New member
Just getting back into the hobby after a 20 year sabatical. Picked up a as new Classic III and have read about increased depth and sensitivity available by modding the controls normally located inside the control box.

I have tried to find DIY info on modding my Classic III SL, as sometimes refered to as the "Dixie Mods"

I can locate the shop that will do it for you for $70 plus shipping, but like to try things myself.

If anyone knows how or has a link I would appreciate it.

As far as I can tell, a mysteeeeerious "Mr. Bill" at someplace known as Surfscanners will do the mods for 70$, which I suppose you already know. I have found some posts from this year which suggest he is still doing the mods. Surfscanners is apparently defunct, though, as I cannot google it.

I have done a GB mod to a CIII myself in the past and I can say this:

If all the things I read about the mods the elusive Mr. Bill is doing are true, the $70 bucks is well spent!

If you or anyone else ever learns what they are or how to contact good 'ol Mr Bill, please email me. The CIII's have always been one of my favs and Im looking for one now...

Thanks,

Mr. Bill aka Bill Crabtree leaves trails all over this web site and several others. He's one of the Admin here and moderates several of the Mall forums as well as a sponser. He occasionally even makes me part with large quantities of my money for his detectors. He and his work are the real deal! Here's the link to his site.

Excellent manualk control. You do not have to adjust the GB of the Classic models all the time, just set it for the coil in question and the ground you normall work. Having Mr Bill's modificatiosn gives you the very handy and functional external Threshold and GB controls, and will also add some sensitivity boost to the upper end of that control.

I have been there a few times--It is in Sweet Home Or. as far as I know--Last summer was the last time--It was still inside of a Sawmill it a very OLD building---I went inside a few years ago and there was detecters everywhere and someone there displayed there machines to me--Last summer NOT 1 detecter in site and I went every where inside the Building--Not 1 sole there----It is on Popular St and that is inside a saw mill in sweet Home Or.

I guess that would explain why they can be hard to contact at times. :) Such an awesome detector yet such a mysterious business. I'm sure they have their reasons.
