White's Classic III air test with Blue Max 600

Hi everyone. Don't get much chance to post here but thought I'd post a link to a video I made while air testing a classic III.

MM..

That is about the same air test performance I get with my Mr. Bill modified IDX Pro (same electronics as Classic 3 SL) with the same settings and coil. Only I get about 8" on a dime, maybe my ground balance adjustment would make a difference, it is slightly positive on my ground. The older BM 600 coil is a better performer than the later 5.3 BullsEye coil in my opinion as I have both. Last year I picked up a High Energy Hot Head coil made by the now defunct Discovery Electronics Co. and it is one hot little 5½" coil, it air tests a dime at 8", the BM 600 is one inch larger in diameter. Also both coils on my IDX Pro will have the same performance in the ground as they do in an air test, proving themselves with 8" coins, just that the 5½" Hot Head has better recovery speed in the iron nails.

Turn the Disc as low as possible and set the Black Sand switch to Black Sand. It usually improves the depth quite a bit.

I haven't tried the detector outside yet. Only had it a couple of weeks and the ground is frozen solid here for a few more months. I think it will make a great machine for coin shooting in trashy areas. The recovery speed is pretty fast. When I get a chance to ground balance and move away from emi I think performance will improve.

Here's another similar video I made with a Tesoro Silver Sabre.

I hope I don't offend anyone by posting a link about a Tesoro detector in the White's forum. :)

I dont have a classic but i do have a whites 5900 and i use the same coil..its my go to combination for park hunting... ive cherrypicked some parks that were very trashed with small pieces of canslaw... i had to crank the disc up high but still got good depth.. im a little surprised you didnt get a signal on the 925 earings back.. i think mine would have gotten an inch on that one.... enjoy it,im sure you will....

It could be the ground balance way off. Haven't touched it yet. I don't know why White's just didn't put a knob for gb instead of having to use a screwdriver.

i wouldnt sweat it... im not sure if ground balance would affect an air test lol..

You are probably right but I wonder why in certain detector manuals they tell you to set gb before air testing? There is no ground to balance in an air test. I guess we have to air balance :)

That's why air testing sucks and means little. Adjusting your GB way negative will get the air test to perform better,if I recall. I'm not detecting coins in the air, therefore I don't care. Mr Bills mods puts the TH GB pots on the outside of the case...Classics are awesome, really hard to go wrong unless you try....

Ya I know air tests are not reliable but when you are under a blanket of snow with new detectors what else are you going to do. I may look into that Mr Bill mod.

Oh I feel the pain for sure, southern WI is in the deep freeze right now. I've done a lot of air testing, don't get me wrong,I think it's a decent indicator of the machines ability. I've found it to be useful for determining what a target may sound like at the very edge of detection too....since that's where the coins seem to be that most of us are after. After many hours on that machine you will see how good it really is. And it's good.
Stay warm!

I did the Mr. Bill's mod on my Classic II and found that it was not a night and day difference to me, but I was able to get a little bit more depth mainly because of the threshold adjustment.
