White's Classic IDX Pro

Hi folks, been detecting for years with mainly Tesoro detectors (great machines) thought that I would give another brand a try for awhile. What's the scoop on the IDX Pro - is it a good one, hoping it has a good disc. and fast responce time like the Tesoro's do. Any pointers that I need to know about (other than Mr. Bill's mods)(can't afford that at this time) any do's/don'ts,etc. Can a person swing the IDX Pro fairly slow with good results I'm not a fast coil swinger. Is the TID fairly accurate. Looking forward to getting the detector and looking forward to all your comments. Thanks! Steve.

Forgot to ask (hate to keep bring up Tesoro's on a White's board) but the older uMax's I have had were hot on rings and small jewelry & was wondering if the IDX Pro will be to. I am mainly a school grounds/tot lot/ hunter & never any beach hunting.

Tip to knowing you have a nickel and not trash. Works most of the time. Center your coil over the suspected nickel. Swing over it in very short sweeps like 3 inches. Note the 5 cent block lights up. Then look to the foil block just to the left of nickel. If you faintly see a ghost flash while sweeping in that notch along with the 5 cents then most likely it's a nickel.

Thanks khouse I will have to remember that. Steve.

Ghosts to the left, Ghosts to the Right, solid in the middle and everythings alright. The IDX PRO is a little jittery in the Flash Phase target Id, to be sure I dig em. Nickles, broken beavertails off of pulltabs and pencil eracer ends have been my finds so far in this area of the meter............someday maybe a gold ring. Happy finding........Hombre

Just the Ghost to the left for nickels. I know what you mean. Get a solid nickel hit, it's coin sized, good round tone. Then dig up a crapping pencil! School yards are full of them. I'm not telling you anything though.

Hey khouse

This old three story brick High School built in 1918 just became available for detecting for me and some of my buddies to hunt last year. It's in a non use time period as of now, and I think it has some good targets left, 1917d dime, 6 wheat penny pocket spill, and lots of nickles. I like to concentrate on the nickle and zinc penny range of the meter, as that is the range for Gold class rings. Through the years I have found 8 of these class rings and have returned 7 of them, the oldest being 1938, 10k gold. Have fun everybody..............Hombre

Steve, the IDX Pro represents the top of the 'Classic' series and it provides what Tesoro refers to as ED-180 discrimination, has great Target ID, excellent target response that is quick with a fast recovery. The Classic series are slow-sweep designs and work great.

Now, comparing it with the Classic ID, it provides the broader low-end Discrimination adjustment (using the Normal/Black Sand toggle), and a Frequency Shift to help counter interference should there be a nearby detector causing you fits. While it is at its best with Bill Crabtree's modifications, you can do just fine if you set the Frequency Shift at the factory preset and then assure you have a good functional Ground Balance setting. If you must, it can be tweaked using the access under the UD flag decal to get to the GB trimmer.

I've relied on the Classics to produce most of my gold jewelery for over a decade, and they haven't let me down. They are great on nickels and gold jewelry, and equally fine for hunting higher-conductive coins.

Just a comment, however, and that is you're going to find it works very similar to a Classic ID. It might have a little better depth, however, because I encountered a few Classic ID's (2 actually) that were just a bit on the wimpy side. I'll be interested to hear your opinions after you've had ample time to put it to work in the field and really get to know it.

Howdy Monte

I've had my IDX PRO modified by Mr. Bill for a little over a year now, and really like it!!!! I was reading your 3 part review of the new White's 6T, some review that one is, gave me carpel tunnel syn. just reading it all. Nice work! In your part 1, you mentioned the "muffled" audio of the IDX as something you would like White's to address.........I thought mine had a wimpy audio, but I guess they all have this issue. I have found that with the right headphones it makes the audio response more "brilliant" and pronounced.

As allways, I enjoy reading all of your posts, because you are a hoot, and proficient writter!!! When are ya going to put finishing touches on that book of yours? I really enjoyed your stories of the "good old days" of detecting, as I did not get into metal detecting until the mid 1990's. It must have been exciting to hunt with the Mahan family in the old ghost town's out West. Thanks .................Hombre
