Whites Classic ID

Jamesb

New member
Hi,

Today I bought a used Whites Classic ID with Mister Bills mods and was wondering about the manual ground balance and threshold controls. I just learned last week on a Minelab Advantage how to do manual ground balance and was wondering on this model if I just listen for a constant sound when bobbing the coil up and down or a decrease in tone when lowering the coil to the soil. Also any tips on this Classic ID would be great.

Thank You

James B

First, let me compliment you on your purchase of a very good model made even more versatile with 'Mr. Bills' modifcations. Next, I'll address the modifications and then help you with the GB set-up.

The mods give you external Threshold and GB controls. They DO NOT need to be constantly adjusted! As a matter of fact, I suggest that the operator consider them to be his/her personal preset controls. They are simple 1-turn controls and the idea is to establish a slight audio Threshold with the Threshold tuner when in All Metal. Once set, you can leave that control alone. It's sort of a custom seting for the headphones you use.

Next is the GB control. It is mainly useful to 'fine tune' the detector's GB setting when you change coils, or when you change to a drastically different site.

Ideally, you want it set just slightly posiitive in the All Metal mode, and then check in the Disc. mode to ensure that you have a workable setting w/o falsing. If you get falsing on the up-lift of the coil over more minerlaized ground in the Disc. mode, then the GB is a little too negative and needs to be increased slightly.

The Ground Balancing procedure is quite simple. I suggest you try and determine some of the more mineralized ground you have in your area to hunt, then you're ready to GB the Classic ID.

I will take your advice. I was not sure what the threshold was for but makes sense since you cleared that up. Ground balance sounds easy also. I did notice when I was playing around today when I got home, not knowing how to GB yet, that when I moved that control, a Quarter would read different in the target ID at different GB settings. But pennies were on the mark. This should stabilize this

Sincerely,

James Burton

Monte as usual has given you expert advice. Good luck with your detector. The modified Classics and Pro's can hang with some of the best and i'm keeping my modded IDX Pro. HH Bill

Adjust Threshold first.

Threshold Setting:
Pull trigger, and adjust the Threshold control to hear the Threshold audio comfortably. One needs to set the Threshold audio loud enough to hear strongly, so that you can set the Ground Balance. Reset it to softer levels for deep hunting in the All Metal mode.

Ground Balance: *
Pull trigger, and hold on or set trigger forward, locked on. Adjust Threshold audio to your hearing. Holding coil a couple of feet above ground parallel, lower coil to ground. The Threshold audio should remain at the same level. If the Threshold audio rises or drops, the Ground Balance control can be adjusted one way or another, so that lowering the coil to the ground the Threshold audio stays the same. Setting it this way would give you a neutral Ground Balance point. Having a slight increase when lowering coil to ground would give you a positive Ground Balance offset. The same in reverse, if the audio went slightly silent, giving you a negative Ground Balance offset. They could be times being a little (+) positive, or (-) negative ground balanced, may enhance target response.

* Ground balance adjustment has a direct affect on the display reading, (ID, IDX). The display has been factory pre-set at a slightly positive (+) ground balance setting. Adjusting ground balance up or down a little from this point, should have negligible affect on the display accurateness.
