12 inch spider won't work. The 950 coil is good in the clear and the 6 inch coil is good in trash and general hunting. Just make sure the coil is rated at 6.59 kHz and your goof to go.
I would recommend any of the 6.59 kHz 6&1/2 inch coils like the BM 600, 5.3 Black Max or 5.3 BullsEye, and never look back. Coils that work for the XL Pro, XLT, and Quantum will work on your Classic ID. Your Classic ID should have come with the 8 inch ProScan 800, then there are the Blue or BlackMax 950 coils that are 9&1/2 inches in diameter. On the smaller side is the BM 350 Snooper which is 4 inches in diameter. BTW the 12 in.spider coil will not work. The 6&1/2 inch coils are the ones I use most of the time as they go plenty deep and handle the trash better.
If you have the 950 and the Bullseye 5.3 or BM 600 coils, your all set...both are great, and the 5.3/600 will not lose much depth over the 950...If that puppy does not have Mr. Bill's mods done on it...Seriously think about having them done...You will have a totally new machine that will get between 2-3 inches extra depth because it can be properly tuned to your ground.
I don't need to do the research as you already did. All I know is what I read in the past from him. I can't keep up with everybody's minds change. I still believe my post is true because I said that I "thought" at least a year ago he wasn't modifying the Classics. So July 29th, 2011 was way out of that time frame. Either way I'm glad he's providing the service for those who need it.
After testing in my old test plot years ago...before I sold that house & property I noted some real differences on a stock (non-modded) Classic ID I picked up cheap to keep as loaner. On a six inch silver dime (in my plot for 8 years at the time I tested) the 950 coil picked it up reliably. The stock 800 would not. I think if I had it modded by Mr. Bill it might have a chance with the 8 inch coil on a six inch deep dime.. The Classic ID is not about depth, it is a quick responding two filter unit. The ID target isn't sophisticated but is reliable within the first four inches if you just want to pick out coins. The deeper coins I tested would peg the ID to the max if they were detected, not a bad thing at all because to me that's a dig signal, (like a +94 or +95 on a DFX/XLT with a depth reading of over 6 inches). It was never my main unit, just a kicker and I still have it. Fitted with a small coil in a trashy area is where I think the unit does best.
