i have a chance to buy a whites classic 111 from a friend it was only used once or twice it looks brand new it is the older model with an eight inch coil it takes three nine volt batteries.he wants 75 dollars for it is it a good coin machine?

The older style Classic III is called a "Classic III Plus." These are excellent machines, especially for $75! A manual is available for download on White's site.

I actually preferred the sounds I got from the older Plus to the later Classic II SL. Still have it, in fact. Only drawback of the older unit is that the 9V batteries cost more!

Buy it! Dig every beep for a while and you will start to pick up on small sound variations that will tell you a bit more information about the target. Helps a lot to use headphones.

If you have any questions, post them on this forum and we'll straighten you out.

it will NOT use the present coils for most of White's 6.59 kHz models. The Classic III PLUS was the newer versions that DOES use the present coils as the XLT, XL Pro, Quantums, and Classic III SL, Classic ID and IDX/IDX Pro.

You could have a Classic III PLUS that has a newer type Blue Max, etc., coil on it, but if it is the Classic III before the 'PLUS' then I would get it only knowing that you will be limited to basically that coil for most detecting.

Oops...Forgot about those even earlier Classics with the non-changeable coil. On the other hand, the 8" is a very good choice for general detecting.

Anyway, if you really get into it, you'll probably end up with several machines, like the rest of us kooks!

Still a solid deal for 75 clams in good shape...

Have fun,
Joe
