Whites Buccaneer - Advice request :)

Hi,

I'm from England and I have recently come across an old Whites Buccaneer metal detector. The full title of it is Buccaneer BFO Mineral-Metal Detector. MFG. By White's Electronics, Sweet Home ORE, USA.

I was just wondering, as I cannot find anything for UK searches about this metal detector and only one image of a similar one that doesn't really come too close... If anyone could tell me anything about it from age, why it's in the UK when I can't find anything similar a value of it and maybe even a manufacture date.

I'll attach some pictures if it works

Thank you!!

Or where should I post the question ? Thank you

I have also had a look at the catalog that is in the forum for "All the Vintage Metal Detectors you could ask for......" http://www.findmall.com/read.php?56,1898523 and my one is not on there

i cant get the upload to work so here are some pictures, can take more if needed

thanx for posting. That's a low-production model, that never sold many. It was at the tale-end of the years when manufacturers were still making BFO's (prior to TRs, VLF's, etc...) . I'm going to guess it's vintage very early 1970s. (1970? '71? )

A dinasour by today's standards. Of almost no use. About the only thing it might be useful for is cache hunting. Because those old BFO's lacked sensitivity to individual coins (3" depth perhaps on coins?), yet were fully capable of getting large objects at depth (hubcaps, jars, cans, etc...). So when you think of it, that makes them good cache-hunters, where you don't want to be bothered with small items. However, with that said, you'd still be better off with a 2-box unit, if caches were really your objective.

As far as vintage collectible, there's not a lot of collectors. And those collectors that are out there generally get their interest pricked with earlier machine (prior to 1965 or prior to 1950, etc...). However: yours being a very low production unit is going to be in very few collections. What I mean is, there's no shortage of late 1960s and early 1970s metal detectors showing up on ebay, flea-markets, garage sales, etc.... But in the case of yours, maybe not so. I have never even see that machine for instance. So just based on that aspect alone (persons wishing to have a sampling of all the whites, etc...) might lack that one in their collection.

I'm assuming you've googled this make/model, so see what other images and references there are to it ?

thanx for posting!

Hi. Thank you so much for your reply. Searching on yhe internet it is very difficult to find anything on it.

Its kind of taking up space at the moment but for want of a better word being "rare" / difficult to
find im just not sure what to do with it.

I think i may just sell it but no idea where or how much. Also i would rather it went to someone who
wants and appreciates it rather than some random on ebay

I have grown quite fond of it
