I inherited a whites blue max 1500 and have no Idea how to set it up to use. This will be my first experience with a detector. Can any one give me a dector 101 lesson

What detector are you using?
Is the Blue Max compatible with that detectors wave length ?

Yeah, If you have anything newer than an XLT, it is NOT gonna work...Made for the older detectors, 4900, 5900, 6000, Classics, Eagles, Quantums, XLT...

HH,

If this coil works on the machine you have then you should just be able to plug it into box.I have one this is a big coil and heavy i do not swing this like a reg coil. You want to move whole machine with it when you swing and try to let it float on the grass.if you swing like reg coil from bottom you could break lower rod.You kind of dance with it like swing your body in same direction back and forth to reduce pressure on lower rod. Will go deep and still pinpoint pretty good almost in the middle of coil.Hope this helped.

Guess you have to weigh the pro's and cons...Is the extra weight worth the increase in depth and ground coverage not to mention a smaller coil is easier to pinpoint...

Exactly! There's the reason they aren't used more.

There's one thing that that is kind of funny....once you pump all the energy (and cash) into accessories, you can quickly reach the point of diminishing returns with some choices. By the time you figure it out, all could have went substantially towards a use specific machine.

"Free" does trump this though...."hassle" could very well take it away again. ( I don't like dancing anyways.... and doing a "Tango" with a search coil is..... so (?)........... wrong!)

If you decide you do not like it, shoot me a PM, and I may be interested in it....

HH,

Sierri madre ithink is the name on it I don't have it here with me. I also have the sierra madre 950 head that came on it new. What I need to know is what setting do i use on the detector.

Here is a link to the newer Sierra Madre: http://whiteselectronics.com/ula-3/sierra-madre.html

I don't know if the older ones were much different than the new ones, but usually no changes are needed when switching coils. If anything, you might have to reduce the gain/sensitivity a little depending on your ground.

The Sierra Madre is used primarily for cache hunting or any large metal object, not a good detector for general coin/jewelry hunting.
