Whites Beach Hunter I.D.

My name's Mark & i am an extreme novice to this hobby. I purchased a used Whites Beach Hunter I.D. from a friend who only used it twice. I have experimented with it in the back yard, and it seems to respond equally to items placed on the ground, such as gold rings, coins and watches, as it does to old nails (which I now have a bucket full of!). While I realize experience should help with this issue, I have concerns about the operation...the Ground control doesn't appear to effect the threshold volume at all from its lowest to its highest setting and I have to set the Sensitivity control to the highest setting to get a response, even from a watch or gold ring place directly on the ground. Am i doing something wrong, or is it possible the detector needs calibrating or something else?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if you got an owners manual with the unit, but here is a link to the on-line manual. http://media.whiteselectronics.com/manuals/Beach%20Hunter%20Manuals/Beach%20Hunter%20ID%20Instruction%20Manual.pdf you can print it out.

Iron should illuminate the red LED in either All Metal or Discriminate mode and it is pretty accurate. If the red LED does not come on over iron, you may very well have a problem with the unit.

Thanks for the quick response! I did get the owners manual, and have followed the set up instuctions to the letter, several times, but still no response from the ground control adjustment & no reaction from the detector unless sensitivity is at maximum....I wonder if it's due to testing it on dirt...is it suitable for that or just sand, as the Beach Hunter name may imply?

I have used the BHID for land hunting without problems so that is not the problem and it has been quite a few years since I had mine so I don't have any more suggestions right now. Do you have a dealer near by? If you give your location maybe a member lives nearby and could take a look at it. It is kind of hard to diagnose your problem without having it at hand.....sorry.

That's a good idea...I live in Macon, Ga.
Anyone out there in the middle Ga. area that might be able to take a look at my detector?
In the meantime, I'll go online to find the closest Whites dealer.
Thanks!

Mark do the battery check......it should be responding on dry land ,beach sand or under water up to 25 feet.....hh......Dan

I installed a complete set of new batteries & the check indicates good...I located a dealer in Warner Robins, Ga. ( about 20 miles away) and am hoping they can test it & show me what I'm doing wrong if it's o.k.
I really do appriciate everyone taking the time to try help me & answer my questions.
I am looking foward to getting this thing going & starting my new hobby

it responds the same how does it respond? Are you saying that regardless of what it is it gives the same color light? What color does it give. The beach hunter does just as well on land as it does on the beach. Your information doesn't give a lot of detail.

Well, I cannot get a variance in the volume of the thresshold hum while adjusting the ground control regardless of how low (or high) I have the sensitivity setting.
Also, I get no response, even from a watch and gold ring placed on an otherwise clean ground (I get the same response regarless of location & I have tried several different areas) unless i have the sensitivity set at 98% or higher. I then get multiple green, yellow and an occasional red over the watch, ring or even a nail.
I have tried with the ground adjustment an min., max. & in between. Matbe I just need more experiance using the detector, but my tests in the yard just don't seem to be getting the results that are indicated in the owners manual. My local dealer suggested i call the factory & tell them what's going on...they may can troubleshoot enough over the phone to ascertain if it needs calibrating?
Thanks again for ya'lls time trying to help!
