Well, out of curiousity, I bought 2 packs of the cheap batteries that came with tax to about $2.00. It takes 8 AA's to power the Whites detectors. Anyway, I slipped in the cheap batteries and the battery check came up to 13.1, which is higher than any of the Copper Top or Rayovac brings it up. I then detected for 10 hours before it dropped down to 9.8, and I then switched out with a new set of batteries. So, for what its worth, the cheap batteries at Wal Mart for 94 cents will run your detector for a day and a half of detecting, at 1/3 the price of the name brand. However, the name brand batteries will last about twice as long as that.
