Well I am thinking about trading my faithful 5900 for a newer detector. I have found hundreds of relics with this machine and almost hate to get rid of it but I am hunting "hunted out" spots and the targets are deep and my good ole 5900 just barely pigs up a signal.I live in Maryland for the soil around here the Whites and Fishers seem to work the best though I have never used anything else.
I here so much about the new XLT's, the MXT's and so on.Any advise would be appreciated.
Jay,
What I didn't see was the particular 5900 model you're referring to. There was the 5900 in the blue housing which was essentially the 6000/Di Series 3 to begin with. Then it progressed to the black-housed 5900/Di Pro SL 90, and even that had some circuitry variations until they settled in on the "Composite Board" (CB) as used in the final revision of the 6000/Di Pro SL.
I preferred the early 5900/Di over the freshly released 6000/Di Pro because the manual GB worked great and they had some 'bugs' in the auto-tracking circuitry of th 6000/Di Pro's. Now, having said that, I also preferred a competitor's model at the time for a lot of my hunting because the blue boxed White's had a poor balance and 'feel' that was quite fatiguing.
When the 5900/Di Pro SL was available with the 'CB' board revision, I took it up as my primary-use Target ID model. Today, if the weight an balance didn't bother me, and it was a 5900/Di Pro SL with the CB circuity board that you're referring to, then I'd probably consider having it checked out and brought up to current 'spec' as they were great performers.
But due to a bad back, shoulder, and other health issues, I just can't wield those bigger, heavier models any more. I prefer the 6000 Pro XL or later renamed XL Pro as the best analog display TID model from White's. Better balance, better battery system, great performance.
If you've got an earlier version, then I'd suggest moving up to a more modern model. The two models I'd choose today that provide a broader amount of TID info and very good ID at depth are the XL Pro from White's and the Explorer from Minelab.
