White's 5000D GEB Relative Scale Reading

Wooden Nickel

New member
I am learning this new thing called metal detecting and have a question.

I acquired a White's 5000D GEB on the cheap, and it finds things! That's a good start.

But here is a question that quite possibly exposes my novicecicity.

It discriminates out nickels at the "7" level and pull-tab rings at "7 1/2." Is this normal? OK, I know the order is OK, but should they be this high on the scale? Just one of those things that we analarchs worry about.

Learning and eating it up every day.

Thanks.

Isn't the meter on the 5000/D just an intensity meter?
and the detector tone ID?
Its been a long time, but I'm thinking the meter can't really be used for ID'in targets.

Sorry guys, but I misled you. I was talking about the scale around the knob, not the meter scale. The knob is seventy percent clockwise before a nickel is disced out. This doesn't leave much room on the pot. Sorry about the confusion, and thanks for the replies.

I just gave a 5000 D to my brother because of having not used it in several years. What you are saying sounds about right to me as that seemed to be about where I used to set mine to disc. out pulltabs and everything below that. Just remember by doing so you will also be discriminating out most gold rings and jewelry, not to mention it also might affect your depth.

Try practicing by throwing a nickel, pulltab and a gold ring on the ground. Set your disc knob to zero (0). As you sweep from left to right over the targets notice the sound(s). Increase the disc knob clockwise just where the nickel starts to null out, in other words the sound maybe choppy or sputtering, notice the setting on the knob. Do this also for the pulltab and gold ring and notice the setting on the knob too. If the nickel nulls out before any of the other targets, then decrease or turn counterclockwise the disc knob until the sound from the nickel comes in loud and clear. I would leave it there.

This way I know for sure that at that setting on your disc knob will get all three targets when you detect.

The 5000/D is a fast sweeping machine, in other words, the faster you sweep over the target lets say junk, pulltabs or bottlecaps, the choppy/sputtering sound it'll make. If you do the same over a good target and have the sound increase or solid sound, most likely a good target.

I hope this helps. Good luck,

TC-NM
